    Description

Celebrate MLK Jr. Day of Service by Saving Trees!

Snohomish County Parks invites you to join staff to care for trees planted at Field's Riffle. Acquired in 1999, Field's Riffle is a 62-acre undeveloped park property along the Snohomish River. After acquisition, douglas-fir, grand fir, vine maple, ferns, and sitka spruce were planted along the river in order to shade the stream, prevent erosion, and provide wildlife habitat. Wildlife at this park includes beavers, so the trees were fenced when installed to prevent beavers from eating them.

Now the trees need to have this wire fencing removed. Volunteers will remove as much wire fencing as possible from around the trees, prune the trees for access, and remove blackberry as needed. On January 20, we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day by devoting three hours to this project and opening slots for more volunteers to help. Only 15 more trees need treatment, so even four volunteers could help us push past the finish line.

Please wear long sleeves and long pants that you don't mind getting dirty, and sturdy, closed-toe shoes. Bring a full water bottle, a snack, and wire cutters if you have them. Other hand tools and gloves will be provided, but you may bring your own if you wish. Remember to bring rain gear if rain is in the forecast.

The turn-in parking location for this park is very small-- it can fit up to four cars. If you plan to come in a group, please register ahead of time and plan to carpool. When you park, make sure not to block any of the surrounding farms' access gates. There is parking along the road, but please use caution when exiting or accessing your vehicle. If you would like to come, but are concerned about access, please email or call the organizer.

This event will be cancelled IF:

    • the Snohomish River is at action level stage or above
    • the area is to experience wind gusts over 30 mph
    • the ground is frozen.

Registrants will receive a cancellation email in advance.
