    Description

Since 1979, Literacy New Jersey has been committed to strengthening New Jersey’s workforce, families and communities by ensuring that free, high quality literacy instruction is available to low literate adults in every New Jersey community. Through our network of trained volunteer tutors, we provide free, personalized instruction in reading, writing, math, English language and digital skills. Tutors work with adults in small groups to help them achieve their personal, professional, and educational goals. Our students are often at the lowest levels of literacy. They may be learning English as a Second Language, improving their basic reading and writing skills, developing digital and job readiness skills, preparing for High School Equivalency diplomas, or becoming U.S. citizens. AmeriCorps members will expand our capacity to provide adult literacy programs by tutoring adults and by providing additional support to our adult learners. No prior educational experience is required—just a commitment to community service and a passion for helping others achieve their goals. Training will be provided.

As an AmeriCorps member, you will play a crucial role in our literacy programs, dedicating your time and skills to empower adult learners. Digital Navigators will work one-to-one and in small groups with community members to help them build technology skills, achieve Northstar Digital Literacy certifications, and connect to employment opportunities, with a focus on serving adults from low-income and historically under-invested communities. Members will support learners through personalized mentorship, group classes, and referrals to community resources.

Digital Literacy and Job Readiness Instruction

    • Teach adults digital literacy skills using the Northstar Digital Literacy curriculum and other approved materials.
    • Provide job readiness instruction, including technology for the workplace.
    • Included prep time to prepare lessons weekly.
    • Provide information and referrals to supportive services such as transportation vouchers, clothing vouchers, and technology access.
    • Distribute program-provided supportive services such as Chromebooks to qualifying participants.

    Participant Intake and Individualized Planning

    • Conduct intakes and formal digital skills assessments.
    • Develop individualized digital literacy plans based on learner goals.
    • Coordinate and/or conduct assessment/reassessment of students.

    Community Outreach and Program Development

    • Collaborate with Workforce Development Boards, benefits offices, and other partners to identify and recruit eligible participants.
    • Promote the program at community events and through targeted outreach.

    General Digital Support for Programs

    • Provide basic tech support for Literacy NJ office staff, volunteers, and students, including troubleshooting common device, software, and connectivity issues.
    • Assist with setting up devices, accounts, and applications for student and program use.
    • Support volunteers in learning and using Literacy NJ’s digital tools, such as Google Classroom, Google Meet, Zoom, and other instructional platforms.
    • Maintain and update shared digital resources and instructional materials for staff and volunteers.
