Volunteer Description: Nurse/Physician Volunteer
Reports To: Nurse Manager
Weekly Hours Needed: 4 hours Weekly or Bi-weekly, unless otherwise approved by Executive Director and Sr. Director of Clinic Operations
Principle Function: The nurse/physician volunteer, under the direction of the Nurse Manager, is an essential team member who works in conjunction with other volunteers and staff at MCWC to provide vital medical care and education to patients.
Volunteer Requirements:
- Holds a current license in good standing with the Texas Board of Nursing or a
Compact state license, or the Texas Medical Board.
- Has a current BLS and/or ACLS CPR certificate.
- Basic knowledge of Ob/Gyn and women’s health issues. (Additional training provided)
- Is dependable, stable, and capable of following through on commitments.
- Expresses sincere desire to reach out to women in crisis pregnancies, especially those who are abortion-vulnerable or abortion-minded.
- Agrees with the MCWC Statement of Principle, the Sanctity of Human Life, and the MCWC Statement of Doctrinal Beliefs (provided with volunteer application).
- Adheres to MCWC Policies and Procedures and does not perform duties outside their scope of practice.
- Respects confidentiality and adheres to HIPAA guidelines.
- Agreement to volunteer for at least one year after training.
- Willingness to learn and grow.
Volunteer Responsibilities:
- Provides confidential and compassionate care to all patients by; performing patient intake and initial assessment, implementing proper specimen testing, administering comprehensive education including necessary intervention/referrals, and performs follow up actions as needed.
- Gives appropriate patient education regarding women’s health issues, sexually transmitted infections, abortion medications and procedures, pregnancy risk medications, and possible pregnancy complications.
- Maintains accurate and complete patient records and documentation.
- Familiar with MCWC referral resources in the community and provides resource information to patients.
- Recognizes situations considered an Emergency, notifies staff, and provides medical care and life support care until paramedic team arrives.
Professional Development:
- Maintains professional license and BLS and/or ACLS CPR certificate.
- Attends Quarterly In-services at MCWC.
- Increase knowledge of obstetrical and gynecological care and women’s health issues.
