We are seeking passionate individuals to join the Fortune School Kindergarten Reading program as volunteer tutors. In alignment with the overall mission of Fortune School which is to close the African-American achievement gap by preparing scholars for college, the goal of the Kindergarten Reading program is to teach kindergartners to read at a first-grade reading level by the end of the school year. As an active participant in achieving this goal, volunteer tutors will be guiding kindergarten scholars twice a week through sight-words, alphabet sounds, and independent reading practice.
Responsibilities:
- Provide small group and one-on-one tutoring: Conduct tutoring sessions on-site with assigned students each week. The session will focus on guiding scholars through sight-words, alphabet sounds, and independent reading practice.
- Promote a positive learning environment: Foster a supportive and encouraging atmosphere that promotes confidence, motivation, and a love of reading.
- Communicate with site and program staff: Maintain regular communication with the staff on site and the UW staff to report on scholar progress, discuss challenges, and seek guidance or support as needed. This also includes staying up to date on communication from program staff/coordinators and responding in a timely manner when needed.
- Complete all required trainings: Complete all required training sessions and attend required meetings to enhance tutoring skills, share best practices, and stay informed on program updates.
