    Description

Director of Communications and Public Engagement (Volunteer)

    Organization: Mentor A Promise (MAP)

    Division: Communications and Creative Media

    Location: Remote

    Type: Volunteer (Unpaid)

    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Through mentorship, academic enrichment, literacy development, creative expression, and housing initiatives, MAP creates safe, consistent, and empowering spaces where young people can thrive.

MAP’s Communications & Creative Media Division tells the stories that shape our movement. Through visual media, storytelling, and digital engagement, the division amplifies the voices of youth and communities — ensuring every message, image, and sound reflects our mission of hope, resilience, and equity.

    Our multimedia initiatives include:

    • Threads of Voices – MAP’s storytelling and podcast platform highlighting real voices of mentorship, artistry, and transformation.
    • The Bells I Hear – a digital audio series exploring themes of belonging, memory, and community through sound and story.
    • MAP’s YouTube Channel – home to original content, interviews, and youth-centered storytelling.
    • Social Media Campaigns – mission-driven visuals and narratives shared across Instagram, X, LinkedIn, and other digital platforms.

    About the Role

We are seeking a passionate and experienced Director of Communications & Public Engagement to lead MAP’s communications strategy, manage a creative team, and oversee storytelling across our digital platforms — including website, social media, YouTube, and podcast channels.

The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker and strong writer who understands how to manage people, build community narratives, and lead a unified message across multiple platforms. You’ll collaborate with directors, artists, and technologists to grow MAP’s public voice and impact.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Lead and manage the Communications & Creative Media team (writers, designers, photographers, videographers, and social media specialists)
    • Oversee development of multimedia content for Threads of Voices, The Bells I Hear, and MAP’s YouTube and social media channels
    • Develop and implement MAP’s overall communications, public relations, and storytelling strategy
    • Manage content calendars and ensure timely publication of campaigns, videos, and press materials
    • Collaborate with leadership and program teams to design campaigns that increase awareness and engagement
    • Write and edit key communications, including newsletters, press releases, and public statements
    • Guide the creation of promotional materials, annual reports, and impact stories
    • Ensure brand consistency in tone, message, and design across all digital and print materials
    • Check and respond to emails daily, ensuring all responses are completed within 48 hours
    • Take responsibility for performance improvement by analyzing engagement metrics and refining communications strategies

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or related field
    • 1-2 years of experience in communications, PR, or media production (nonprofit experience preferred)
    • Demonstrated experience managing a small team or leading cross-functional creative projects
    • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills across multiple media formats
    • Proficiency in digital communication tools (Google Workspace, Canva, Mailchimp, Adobe Creative Suite)
    • Experience with social media management, content strategy, and analytics
    • Knowledge of video or podcast production processes a plus
    • Passion for education, mentorship, and equity-centered storytelling

    Commitment

    • Volunteer leadership role requiring approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
    • Remote-first with opportunities for in-person collaboration in New York City

    What You’ll Gain

    • Leadership experience managing communications and creative media for a mission-driven nonprofit
    • Opportunities to shape MAP’s storytelling across podcast, film, and digital media platforms
    • Collaboration with designers, writers, and technologists creating meaningful content
    • Professional references, mentorship, and creative portfolio development
    • The satisfaction of using storytelling to empower youth, amplify voices, and build community impact
