My Own Books brings children from under-served New York City public schools to bookstores and lets each child pick out $60 worth of books to start his/her own home library.
Volunteers, working in pairs or groups, are matched with a school.
They meet with the educators and children who will be participating to introduce the program, accompany each class on its shopping trip to the bookstore, then follow up with another school visit to hear all about what the children have been reading.
We work with schools in all five boroughs.
The time commitment for working with one school amounts to roughly six weekday mornings over a two month period.
