Our volunteers are the backbone of our organization! We provide free tutoring for children and adults in Horry County, SC who struggle with basic reading, writing, and/or math.
Our volunteers tutor 1 hour, twice each week for children and 2 hours/once a week for adults. We provide the materials and training for you to provide the most effective help for the student you are assigned. Tutors teach one-to-one and in their local library.
Each student has a special program that meets their needs. Tutor volunteers consistently report that the materials are easy to use and you don't have to be a teacher! However, if you are a former educator, please help us out!
We work with the schools and our Executive Director attends parent-school meetings (IEP, 504 Plans, and Assessment Planning meetings) as well.
We have a long waitlist of students wanting to be tutored. We hope you join our team!
Once you submit your volunteer request to Palmetto Literacy Council, a member of our staff will call or email you to schedule a time to attend a Volunteer Orientation and Training (VOT). You'll complete our Intake forms at the VOT. A background check will be completed. If you are volunteering to become a tutor, you will be assigned a student. We'll set up an initial meeting with the student (and family) to establish a tutoring schedule while the student completes a short baseline assessment. The family and the student will be excused, and you will be trained to use the materials selected for tutoring with that student. Tutoring is 1 hour, twice each week.
