    Description

    We need flexible and adaptable volunteers to lead discussion groups, develop educational materials, and brainstorm interactive activities on numerous topics. Below is a list of programs we would like to develop and/or improve:

    • Computer Lab: Instruct students to earn certificates in typing, data entry, word processing basics and spreadsheet basics. Instruct students to navigate the Internet, set up and use email, etc. Those experienced in using 3D printers needed.
    • Arts & Crafts: More info in the “Art Instructor” Category
    • Linguistics: Refresh students and educate them on sign language, reading, and writing.
    • Aquatics and Fitness: Low-impact exercises including but not limiting to aerobics, yoga, tai chi, chair exercises.
    • Self-Advocacy: Educating students about effective communication, rights, self-care, and how to make more informed decisions about their lives.
    • Journalism: Instruct a group of students in writing articles for Sophie’s Gazette.
    • Nutrition: Educate students on the importance of a balanced diet according to their preferences and needs

    Topics outside these areas are welcome with discussion! Hours are flexible M-F 8:30-2 PM. Class times are from 9:30–10:30 AM and 12:30–2 PM.

    Volunteer Requirements:

    • Can provide 30 hours of service in 3 months or 1 year of service
    • Volunteer application and Interview
    • Physical, tuberculosis screening and drug/alcohol screening (Provided by SMSC)
    • Fingerprinting (Provided by SMSC)
    • Proof of citizenship or immigration status
    • If you are under 18 years of age, you must provide consent from a legal guardian
    • 2-3 hour orientation training
    • Acknowledgement of receipt of SMSC Volunteer Handbook
