    Description

    Background

    The Belize Maya Forest Trust (BMFT) is a Belizean non-profit, non-governmental organization established in 2020 for the conservation and management of the Belize Maya Forest (BMF), a tropical moist forest reserve of approximately 241,000 acres in northwestern Belize. The BMFT channels resources toward and oversees community-led initiatives in land stewardship and restoration, environmental education, climate resilience, forest management and sustainable agriculture.

    Description

    As a Communications and Development volunteer, you will work remotely with a small team of committed conservation practitioners and their internationally renowned Managing Director in shaping compelling messages about the organization’s work for diverse audiences. This is a perfect role for a retiree with years of communications experience working with non-governmental organizations in conservation across social media and online platforms.

    Requirements and skills

    • A Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Communications, Communications and Development, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field.
    • At least 5 years of professional experience in communications and content development, preferably within NGOs or institutions involved in conservation and sustainable development, poverty alleviation or social impact.
    • Fluency in Spanish is an asset but not required
    • Proficiency is required in digital tools including Microsoft software suite with competency in photography, video editing, graphic design software (e.g., Adobe suite, Canva) an asset.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Teamwork: Liaising with program leads and researchers at BMF to understand their work and develop key messaging
    • Communications planning: Developing and implementing a communication strategy and plan, and branding guidelines aligned with the BMFT’s mission
    • Content creation: Creating compelling content (press releases, information briefs, stories, infographics, social media posts) to highlight programs, funded projects and community impacts.
    • Support to fundraising: Advising the Director on effective communications strategies for fundraising
