The safeguarding of the 241,500 acres of Belize Maya Forest (BMF) represents a significant and recent advancement in Belize's commitment to land and ocean conservation. Situated in the Orange Walk District, the reserve shares its western boundary with Guatemala, while to the north, it adjoins the Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area (RBCMA). To the east and south, it is flanked by privately owned agricultural lands, including those of the Spanish Lookout community and Valley of Peace Farms Ltd., among others. Additionally, the northern section of the reserve encircles a predominantly forested private property known as Gallon Jug, which is home to the Chan Chich Lodge and the Sylvester Village, adding to the area's rich ecological and cultural tapestry.
Together with the Rio Bravo Conservation Management Area and nearby protected lands, the BMF brings together over 500,000 acres of safeguarded forest, representing nine (9) percent of Belize’s total land area. This significant expanse not only serves as a crucial ecological corridor but also connects to the vast Selva Maya, a remarkable rainforest that stretches across Belize, Mexico, and Guatemala. This initiative not only enhances biodiversity but also strengthens the ecological integrity of the region, showcasing Belize's leadership in environmental stewardship and its dedication to preserving the natural heritage for future generations.
