2026 and Beyond | The Future of Idealist

Over the last thirty years, Idealist has become one of the largest online platforms for connecting people for good. As we look toward the future of our platform, we see so much opportunity and potential to do even more.

Every day, many of us want to respond to what’s happening around us. We want to help our neighbors, support causes we care about, strengthen our communities, and contribute to something larger than ourselves. But even with the best intentions, it can be difficult to know where to begin. 

The future of Idealist is about changing these intentions into action.

In 2018, we launched an initiative focused on helping more people get involved in their local communities: Idealist Days. Thousands of people around the world raised their hands to join us. They hosted their own local Idealist Days events by partnering with nonprofits to volunteer, or simply gathered with neighbors to solve a local problem.

Since then, the world has navigated some of the most destabilizing global events—but there has never been a shortage of people looking for an opportunity to help others. The tricky part, we’ve found, is helping them get started.

As technology continues to evolve, we see an opportunity not simply to connect people to opportunities, but to help create a culture of consistent, local action. Idealist Days is built on this idea: What if millions of people around the world took small, positive actions together on the same day each month?

We’ve already seen what good can happen when we gather with like-hearted individuals who share the same desire for a better world. Each month—on 1/1, 2/2, 3/3, etc.—our community has dreamt up incredible initiatives to support causes they care about and invited others to join them.

This year, on Idealist Day 5/5, more than 52 events took place worldwide with thousands of participants to usher in the next chapter of Idealist.

Through our growing network of volunteer opportunities and community partnerships, our platform will make it easier than ever for people to move from intention to action.

Idealist will continue evolving in the years ahead, but our mission remains clear: to help people connect through action. We’ll continue to serve our job seeking community by listing the latest job opportunities at social-impact organizations, but our primary focus will be on engaging more people to take action in whatever way they can, with whomever they’d like, to make the world a better place.

Small acts matter, and so does participation. When enough people come together with a shared desire to improve the world around them, extraordinary things can happen.
