    Description

    Kaishian and Mortazavi LLC is hiring a Civil Rights Paralegal to join our team. K+M is a small civil rights firm located in Brooklyn handling civil rights and personal injury cases across New York City, with a focus on police abuse and Rikers Island jail violations. K+M is seeking a paralegal familiar with Federal and New York State civil court procedures and deadlines, case management, and legal writing to join our dedicated team.     Responsibilities:

    • Draft, review, and file routine legal documents conforming to the applicable rules of federal court and state courts.
    • Proofread and file documents prepared by attorneys.
    • Create and maintain case files in collaboration with attorneys and staff.
    • Facilitate the meeting of case deadlines by tracking due dates and providing timely reminders.
    • Conduct legal research.
    • Assist in preparing deposition materials, exhibits, and trial binders.
    • Demonstrate proactive problem solving and case management skills.
    • Provide clients with basic information such as procedural status updates if requested.
    • See all tasks through to completion, including by delegating related assignments to appropriate team members and by following up with clients/parties/providers as necessary.

    Qualifications:

    • Proactive, clear communication and attention to detail. You take ownership of your tasks and proactively communicate the status of your work. You are adept at staying on top of deadlines, managing the logistics of case files, and balancing competing priorities in a fast-paced environment. You create impeccable systems for ensuring you tackle your to-do lists without letting tasks or deadlines slip through the cracks.
    • Skilled at document formatting and preparation. You are an expert at formatting legal documents, including using Microsoft Word to create Tables of Content and Tables of Authorities. You are comfortable at quickly ensuring documents match the required court-specific formatting rules, catching typos, and formatting citations and cover pages.
    • Sense of urgency and follow-through. You are ready to take ownership of managing medical records requests and FOIL requests for cases in your portfolio, including regularly auditing your cases to ensure we have all of the documents we need to effectively litigate on behalf of our clients.
    • Values-aligned. You are excited to join a firm that is committed to litigating against state violence.
    • 2+ years of experience as a paralegal strongly preferred.
    • Experience with tracking billable time.
    • E.D.N.Y. and/or S.D.N.Y. experience.
    • Experience with remote Case Management Systems preferred.
    • Familiarity with NY CPLR and Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.
    • Legal writing and legal research experience.
    • Familiarity with PACER and NYSCEF filing systems.
    • NYS Notary license required OR must satisfy licensing requirements within 30 days of hiring (associated costs-including testing, licensing, and renewal fees—to be covered by firm).

    Benefits and Other Information:

    Hours: M-F 9:30 AM-5:30 PM, with extended hours limited to trial & non-routine, time-sensitive tasks

    Salary: Commensurate with experience, base range $80k-$90k

    PTO/Vacation: Two weeks (14 days) of paid time off and one week (7 days) paid sick time

    Days Off: All federal holidays plus additional scheduled days off annually

    Location: Office located in DUMBO/Downtown Brooklyn, with hybrid work-from-home schedule available after 30-day trial period

    Transit: Metrocard or equivalent applicable transit benefits provided

    Bonuses: Position eligible for mid-year and annual performance-based bonuses
