Full-Time Communications Manager
About the Organization:
The CA Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative (CHNSC) is a statewide organization whose mission is to mobilize the nail salon workforce to transform the health, safety, and working conditions of the nail salon industry to build a healthy, sustainable, and equitable community. CHNSC builds power in the nail salon community through: leadership development, education and outreach, policy advocacy, civic engagement, narrative change & communications, and research. Position Overview:
The Communications Manager reports to the Executive Director and leads the development, implementation, and evaluation of CHNSC’s strategic communications, narrative, and media strategies. This position will advance CHNSC’s mission by strengthening our organizational voice, community narratives, and ability to expand our advocacy, civic engagement, organizing, fundraising, and movement-building efforts. This position supervises the Communication Coordinator and manages consultants, designers, and others as needed.
The Communications Manager works closely with the CHNSC Leadership Team while developing communications strategies that are aligned internally across the organization’s campaigns and programs through consistent external messaging, storytelling, and coordination towards winning systemic changes that benefit low-income and working class nail salon workers and their families.
CHNSC seeks a strategic storyteller who can share the first-hand experiences of community members and define point of view and power. The Communications Manager must be deeply committed to racial, economic, reproductive, gender, and environmental justice, and have a strong understanding of Vietnamese and Asian American communities and the experiences of immigrant and refugee populations.
Responsibilities:

Strategic Communications (30%):
- Develop, implement, and evaluate CHNSC’s communications plan that is aligned with CHNSC’s goals and strategies
- Partner with organizing, civic engagement, research, and policy teams to develop strategic communications plans for campaigns, programs, reports, events, etc., and provide messaging support
- Create and maintain a communications infrastructure that strengthens internal coordination, planning, and cross-team collaboration.
- Develop and implement the communications team workplan, including priorities, timelines, and key performance indicators
- Develop and maintain evaluation tools for reporting digital and online communications metrics to assess impact and inform digital and online communications strategy
Narrative Strategy (30%):
- Develop narrative and storytelling strategies that values, engages and elevates the experiences and leadership of the Vietnamese nail salon workforce
- Translate health, labor, environmental, economic, racial, and social justice issues into accessible and culturally relevant messaging
- Connect internal and external opportunities to amplify community experiences and leadership through media, storytelling, videos, reports, etc.
Digital Communications and Media (25%):
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with mainstream and ethnic media
- Draft and oversee press releases and public statements
- Prepare staff and community leaders for media interviews and grassroots advocacy
- Oversee CHNSC’s website, newsletters, social media, and other external communications
- Manage an editorial calendar across all communications platforms
- Ensure consistent branding and visual identity across all communications materials and channels
Additional Responsibilities (15%):
- Represent CHNSC in external partnerships and coalitions
- Supervise the Communications Coordinator and manage communications consultants such as video producers, designers, and artists
Preferred Qualifications:
- At least four to five years of experience in strategic communications, media relations, advocacy, nonprofit communications, or related field
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or equivalent
- Demonstrated commitment to CHNSC’s mission and values, including immigrant and refugee rights, environmental justice, reproductive justice, workers’ rights, racial justice, and gender justice
- Experience in developing and/or implementing a strategic communications plan that supports advocacy, organizing, and movement building
- Strong understanding of narrative change, ethnic media, and digital communications
- Demonstrated oral communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to code-switch, depending on the audience, and convey information in a clear, concise way while presenting to others
- Experience building relationships with mainstream and ethnic media
- Strong project management and time management skills while able to manage multiple projects
- Experience supervising staff, consultants, students, and interns
- Creative thinking and proven systematic organizational skills to work independently without supervision, determine workload priorities to complete work in a timely manner, and identify and resolve problems.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines, take proactive initiative, and work both independently and in a team environment.
- Proven skills by working across teams within an organization and across coalitions
- Experience with Action Network, Squarespace, Canva, Google analytics, and social media.
- Speaking and writing in Vietnamese is preferred but not required.
Required Qualifications:
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
- Experience with grassroots organizing, advocacy, labor, public health, environmental justice, immigrant rights, or social justice organizations.
- Ability to manage multiple complex communications projects from concept to completion
- Experience in using comprehensive strategic communications and messaging to advance the organization's mission and goals.
- Strong relationship-building skills to work effectively with staff, community members, mainstream and ethnic media, and other partners.
- Commitment to equity, collaboration, and community leadership
Compensation
This position is a full-time, exempt position. The salary range is $81,000 - 90,000 depending on experience. We offer a competitive health benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision coverage, as well as a generous paid time off schedule.
Work Environment / Physical Demands
This position will be hybrid, with in-office being in Oakland or Orange. Able to work on a computer including sitting at a desk for extended periods of time with or without reasonable accommodation; manual dexterity to operate a keyboard; able to see or read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; able to speak clearly and in audible tones on the phone and in-person and be understood by others; able to hear and understand speech, including on the phone; able to understand and follow oral and written instructions; able to occasionally lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds, etc. Must be able to stretch, bend, kneel, twist, squat, reach above or below the shoulder, push, grasp, and lift up to 20 pounds. able to walk, drive, write, stand, and sit.
