About Us
Dame Cicely Saunders, a British nurse, social worker, and physician, is widely regarded as the founder of the modern hospice movement. In 1967, she established St. Christopher's Hospice in London, pioneering a model of care that emphasized pain control, emotional support, and dignity at the end of life.
The philosophy of hospice is rooted in the belief that every person has the right to die pain-free and with dignity, and that families should receive the necessary support to allow them to do so. It recognizes dying as a natural part of life and does not attempt to hasten or postpone death. Hospice care focuses on quality of life rather than curative treatment, offering a holistic approach that integrates physical, emotional, spiritual, and social care.
At Hygieia Hospice Care, we are committed to these founding principles. We strive to bring compassionate care and a sense of peace to those we serve, always honoring the uniqueness of each individual’s journey.
