Legislative Director

Job Description

The Legislative Director will be responsible for overseeing all legislative and policy matters for the office. They will be the liaison between policy advocates, other legislative offices, and Assemblymember Siffert’s office to develop, introduce, track, and advance legislation that is aligned with the Assemblymember’s legislative goals and committee responsibilities. The Legislative Director will report to the Chief of Staff and to the Assemblymember.

This position will begin on January 4th, 2027, upon the swearing-in of Assemblymember David Siffert.

Responsibilities

• Work with Chief of Staff and Assemblymember to develop and set policy priorities
• Work with the Assemblymember to draft legislation and to review existing legislation
• Project manage all legislative and policy priorities to ensure they continue to progress
• Meet with issue experts, advocacy organizations, constituents, and directly impacted New Yorkers
• Prep the Assemblymember for meetings, hearings, floor debates, and Assembly conference and caucus matters
• Manage temporary legislative fellows, interns, and externs that support operations in the Albany office

Key Abilities & Experience

• Knowledge of New York State legislative process and an understanding of New York State policy issues
• Demonstrated organizational and project management skills, including the ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and maintain consistent attention to details
• Residence in New York State upon the beginning of employment start date

Qualifications:

• Are based in Albany or willing to travel from NYC and lodge in Albany for all session days (most weekdays from January - June)
• Demonstrated commitment to advancing progressive policy across AD-66 and New York State

Bonus points if you:

• Have experience working with New York State legislation and the New York State legislature
• Have established relationships in New York State government
• Have a JD
• Are a resident of AD-66

Salary & Benefits

This is a full time, overtime exempt position, with salary consummate with experience in the range of $65,000 - $80,000. This position offers health, vision + dental insurance as well as a retirement plan. The position also comes with sick days, vacation days, and personal time, as well as state holidays.
