Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge

  • About Us

Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1987, and contains approximately 1,049 acres. The Refuge's origin is closely tied to the mitigation of impacts that resulted from the construction of a second powerhouse at the Bonneville Lock and Dam on the Columbia. This construction resulted in the loss of 1,122 acres of habitat on the Washington side of the Columbia River. Portions of Steigerwald Lake Refuge were initially acquired for fish and wildlife mitigation purposes associated with the construction project.
