    The Office of Senate President pro Tempore is held by Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego), who serves as leader of the California State Senate. Senator Atkins represents Senate District 39, which includes the cities of San Diego, Coronado, Del Mar, and Solana Beach.

    About Pro Tem Atkins: Senator Atkins began her tenure in the Senate in 2016, and previously served as Speaker of the California State Assembly. In January 2018, Senator Atkins was chosen by her colleagues to be the next Senate President pro Tempore. She is the first woman and the first openly LGBTQ person to lead the Legislature’s upper house. Throughout her career, Senator Atkins has been a champion for affordable housing, the natural environment, healthcare, veterans, women, and the LGBTQ community.
