  • About Us

    The Division of Multilingual Learners (DML) leads the New York City Department of Education’s (DOE) focus on and support of its vast number of Multilingual Learners/English Language Learners (MLs/ELLs) and immigrant students. To close the opportunity gap, promote racial equity, and ensure high expectations, rigorous instruction, and a supportive environment for over 140,000 racially, culturally and linguistically diverse students, DML:

     Provides professional learning opportunities and resources aligned to the New York State Education Department Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Education Framework;

     Delivers policy guidance, data tools, and training to support ML/ELL program design and implementation;

     Designs resources and strategies that facilitate college and career preparation and creates entry points to CTE, work-based learning, and postsecondary pathways for MLs/ELLs;

     Builds the capacity of school staff to learn continuously through a disciplined approach to problem-solving including rapid cycles and embedded measures;

     Equips families with the resources needed to fully participate in their children’s education; and

     Partners with our communities to ensure our instructional priorities affirm and meet the needs of every student.
