Sahajanand Special School

From its humble beginnings 12 years ago as a classroom conducted under a tree, the Special School has evolved to become part of a Centre of Excellence in Mtwapa. 

The school consists of a primary school department, a secondary school department as well as a department for vocational training where our students have the opportunity to explore their skills in the fields of arts & craft, tailoring, agriculture amongst others.

Arguably one of the largest special needs school in Africa, the school is a complex that is also home to dispensaries, book stores and treatment rooms where our students have the benefits of receiving various treatments from our team of specialists including a doctor, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech & language therapists to name but a few.

The school is now home to over 1000 students with various forms of mental and physical disabilities, not only from all over Kenya, but also from as far away as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and also Southern Sudan.

Given that the children are challenged learners, we try to use different techniques to make learning more practical and fun for the children. Most learning in the classes is done through watching and imitating movements, touching/feeling objects, singing and dancing and drawing. 

Our aim is to empower our students with knowledge and skills for the betterment of their lives, we therefore also consider the health and wellbeing of our children to be important. Therefore, besides teaching, we also look forward to welcoming enthusiastic and passionate volunteers who can help out with all different kinds of activities that can help with the development of our children including music, singing, arts & crafts, physical education, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, agriculture, yoga and any forms of alternative therapies.
