The University of Georgia Fanning Institute

About Us

The Fanning Institute is a unit within the area of Public Service and Outreach at the University of Georgia, with the specific mission of enriching the value of resources communities have at their disposal by increasing community capacity to utilize and benefit from these resources. The Fanning Institute employs faculty and staff from a variety of disciplines involving community, economic, and leadership development. Fanning faculty hold appointments as public service faculty, with the terms of their appointment and promotions subject to guidelines established by the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach and the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. Because public service and outreach activities deal with a broad range of societal issues and needs, faculty rely heavily upon the integration of knowledge from many disciplines, as well as the application of experience-based understanding of real-world challenges. Faculty must understand and embrace the land grant mission of public service and outreach, including serving the needs of underrepresented and/or economically disadvantaged individuals and communities.
