About Us

FDNY Counseling Service Unit

The mission of the CSU is to help FDNY members exposed to WTC and their families reach their optimal level of mental health through assessment, intervention, treatment planning, treatment referral, and follow-up. The staff of the Counseling Service Unit works in concert with the FDNY administration, chief officers, line officers, union officials and the Bureau of Health Services.

The CSU has offered services to personnel and their families since 1966. The CSU began primarily as an alcohol treatment program offering assistance to members recovering from substance abuse addictions. Over time, CSU changed its role to focus on stress and grief counseling for firefighters, EMS workers and their families, especially for those suffering from a line-of-duty death or severe injury. Our WTC counseling was a natural outgrowth of this primary mission. Presently CSU offers individual, group and couple counseling often initiated by Peer Counselor Intervention.
