About Us

At DC KinCare Alliance, we seek to achieve a future where all DC children live in a safe and stable home without fear of abuse or neglect. We believe that supporting kin caregivers (usually grandparents or other relatives) who raise children in crisis will help accomplish this goal. We work to support kin caregivers who have opened their homes and hearts to DC’s most vulnerable and at-risk children whose parents are not able to care for them. Parents may be incarcerated, homeless, have a substance abuse or mental health problem, and/or abuse or neglect their children. Kin often step up to care for these children who have multiple and varied needs without any assistance, and do so despite the fact that many live in poverty and are disabled themselves. At DC KinCare Alliance, we respect and empower kin to care for these children by identifying and advocating for effective health and mental healthcare, substance abuse treatment, financial supports, legal representation, and other support services for the whole family unit. We hope that, through our work, we can break the cycle of child abuse and neglect in DC.
