  • About Us

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services (CMSWS) is a joint municipal and county stormwater utility that serves the City of Charlotte, the surrounding towns of Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, Matthews, Mint Hill, and Pineville, as well as Mecklenburg County. Our staff works to protect and improve the quality of streams and other surface waters. We also continuously assess and improve storm drainage to protect public safety and ensure long-term sustainability.

Come help us keep our surface waters pollution-free by volunteering! CMSWS hosts a volunteer event on the Second Saturday and Last Thursday of every month, as well as some additional events throughout the year.

Check out the type of opportunities we have:

    • Stream Cleanup - Volunteers will be picking up trash in the stream and along the stream bank at the listed location.
    • Storm Drain Marking - Volunteers will meet at the listed location and receive supplies and a map of a nearby neighborhood to walk or drive to.
    • Tree Maintenance- Volunteers will be pruning trees, straightening tree tubes, and fixing weed mats.

    Important Details:

    • All minors must be accompanied at events. While we don't have an age minimum for events, stream clean-up involves navigating uneven, sometimes steep, terrain. Wading in streams may be unpredictable. We recommended that children under 10 be kept out of streams during these events and monitored closely.
