  • Mission

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary was authorized by Congress on June 23rd, 1939. This act authorized the Coast Guard to use civilian volunteers to promote boating safety on the nation's waterways. On October 19, 1996 Congress greatly increased the responsibilities and training of the Auxiliary. The intent of Congress was to expand the ability of the Coast Guard to utilize Auxiliary Coast Guard units and members for missions not contemplated in 1939. The Coast Guard Authorization Act increased the scope of the Auxiliary's duties to include any role, mission, or operation that the Commandant of the Coast Guard might envision. Thus, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, traditionally known for its Boating Safely Classes and Vessel Safety Checks, now has greatly increased responsibilities.

    About Us

We are the uniformed, civilian all-volunteer arm of the United States Coast Guard. With nearly 30,000 members, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary actively provides safety patrols on area waterways and regularly meets with the boating public at marinas and in classrooms. We also directly assist the U.S. Coast Guard in non-law enforcement programs such as search and rescue, and marine environmental protection. Based at Coast Guard Station Gloucester, Flotilla 46 is seeking volunteers to assist in a wide range of programs such as Marine Safety Patrols, Boater Education, Marine Environmental Preservation, and Port Security. If you are looking for a volunteer organization that offers you valuable training and experience while giving you the opportunity to give back to your country, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is the perfect organization for you!
