About Us

The New York City Department of Education is the largest school system in the nation, with nearly 1.1 million students and 135,000 employees, including 75,000+ teachers, and an annual operating budget of over $24.0B+. The Department of Education (DOE) is committed to creating a system of 1,800+ great schools.


The mission of the Office of Equity and Access (OEA) is to end long-standing racial, ethnic, gender and socioeconomic disparities across the DOE and direct resources to communities most in need. OEA addresses access and opportunity gaps for historically underserved students by developing and managing initiatives, programs and support services for students, families and school communities. The work is entrenched in the desire to provide all students and families necessary access to the full landscape of high quality education.
