  • About Us

The Oakland Public Library (OPL)  includes the Main Library in downtown Oakland, 16 branch libraries throughout the city, the African American Museum and Library at Oakland, the Tool Lending Library, and the Second Start Adult Literacy and Learning program. Our libraries provide the community with free access to materials, reference librarians, public computers, printers, Wi-Fi, and other resources. Staff at each location plan and present a variety of engaging programs for all ages.

OPL’s mission is to empower people of all ages to explore, connect, and grow, and our organizational values include diversity, equity, community, responsive service, adaptability, empowerment, and joy. The library’s resources, services, and programs support our mission. They are free of charge, easy to access, and widely available throughout Oakland.

We are supported by the Friends of the Oakland Public Library and by the Library Commission, as well as by local Friends' groups around the city.
