COMPENSATION: $70,000 - $80,000
The crisis in local news poses a severe threat to democracy and the health of communities. Rebuild Local News believes that in addition to improved business models and increased philanthropy, public policy plays a crucial role.
Rebuild Local News develops public policies to strengthen local news – and then works on the state and national level to pass effective legislation. Our pathbreaking set of policy initiatives, which we advocate for alongside partners, has helped advance effective, First Amendment-friendly legislation in California,Connecticut, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Utah, and Washington. Together, these states have established programs directing more than $316.2 million to local newsrooms. We are working in another dozen states. Rebuild Local News also runs the Rebuild Local News Coalition, which unites newsrooms, labor unions, and civic organizations committed to revitalizing local journalism. Collectively, the groups in the Coalition represent over 3,000 newsrooms and thousands of journalists, working together to safeguard the future of local news.
We focus on public policies that are nonpartisan, platform agnostic, future-friendly and content neutral.
THE ROLE
We are seeking a skilled organizer and communicator with exceptional project management and planning skills to oversee the operations and expansion of the Rebuild Local News Coalition, a national coalition representing over 3,000 newsrooms and thousands of journalists. The coalition is a crucial part of Rebuild Local News because it ensures our policy proposals are grounded in the real-world needs and views of a diverse community of journalism practitioners. In addition, the Coordinator will provide support to the Government Affairs & Partnerships team to help develop state-based coalitions consisting of stakeholders in the national coalition. This role reports to the Director of Government Relations and Partnerships and will work closely with other members of the team to advance these priorities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Coalition Management
- Develop and implement strategies to expand and strengthen the coalition, aligning efforts with the organization’s broader goals. Ensure that coalition activities support the organization’s advocacy, policy, and community-building initiatives.
- Help coalition members mobilize their own stakeholders for legislative action
- Establish meaningful relationships with key coalition leaders and coordinate engagement with heads of membership at partner organizations to understand expectations, align shared goals, and find opportunities for deeper alignment.
- Manage monthly coalition meeting agendas, coordinating guest speakers and ensuring sessions align with member needs and coalition priorities.
- Offer ongoing support and programming to coalition members to support capacity building.
- Help launch and manage policy‑ or sector‑specific working groups, including agenda planning, member engagement and cross‑team coordination.
Membership stewardship
- Ensure coalition membership delivers clear, tangible value, through advocacy support, shared resources, and peer connections so that members remain engaged.
- Coordinate recruitment and application process for organizations joining the Coalition including the process for joining, drives to recruit members, and onboarding processes.
- Update and maintain membership materials including the internal contact directory, principles of membership, intake form, and monthly meeting calendar.
- Maintain coalition member data, including organization type, geographic location and impact.
- Collect member feedback to inform improvements to programming, coalition strategy and resources of use to members.
Communications and advocacy support
- Assist in development of materials and mobilization of coalition members quickly around emerging policy developments, urgent calls to action or time‑sensitive coalition needs.
- Serve as a point of contact for organizations seeking information and support to engage in the advocacy work of Rebuild Local News.
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of 4-7 years of relevant experience in community organizing, grassroots engagement, membership organization coordination, advocacy or related fields, including supervision of staff or directing others' work.
- Event or conference coordination experience is a plus.
- Track record of managing large scale stakeholder networks, including managing onboarding processes, overseeing engagement, and developing member-informed programming.
- Familiarity with digital organizing and CRM tools (e.g., Salesforce, Action Network, EveryAction, HubSpot, or Airtable) to track member engagement and manage communications data.
- Experience planning and facilitating large group meetings or working groups, including securing and interfacing with guest speakers.
- Comfort working in a fully remote or hybrid work environment.

- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy and the ability to meet deadlines.
- Comfortable working independently on a fully remote team.
- Willingness to travel as necessary for conferences or events.
