The Salvation Army World Service Office (SAWSO), along with other supporting offices (SOs), play a key role in this global effort, serving as the U.S.-based arm in supporting high-impact international assistance tailored to meet local needs in communities around the world. Guided by our mission to meet human needs without discrimination, we work alongside local partners to provide food, shelter, healthcare, education, and emergency relief to individuals and families facing poverty, displacement, and crisis.

Key Responsibilities

SUPPORT ONGOING EFFORTS TO ASSESS AND IMPROVE WASH IN SALVATION ARMY HEALTHCARE FACILITIES. (~70% OF YOUR TIME)

• Update current WASH-FIT database as new reports arrive. Review reports for data quality and enter them in the database (with the help of an AI large language model)
• Run queries to identify areas of highest need.
• Support Salvation Army efforts to develop a multi-country program to improve WASH in health care facilities by helping to cost improvement to prioritized facilities and countries.
• SUPPORT ONGOING RISK MAPPING DUE TO CHANGES IN US GOVERNMENT FUNDING FOR HEALTH IN SALVATION ARMY SUPPORTED COUNTRIES (~30% OF YOUR TIME)
• Research MOUs between USG and governments of key Salvation Army countries
• Develop brief reports / presentations identifying major implications of the MOUs for Salvation Army’s health work in each country.
• Possibly conduct occasional semi-structured interviews with key informants in Sub-Saharan Africa, and Asia to gather information on on-the-ground impact of the MOU to TSA’s work.

• Mission‑aligned student (or recent grad) who’s passionate about improving lives of people in low-income settings
• Comfortable with simple data management and analysis
• Interested in international development and the implications of foreign assistance policy on marginalized populations

Qualifications

Required

Education & Experience

• Current junior/senior undergraduate or graduate student (or recent graduate within 12 months) in Foreign Relations, International Studies, Public Health, Peace Studies or related fields.
• Written and verbal fluency
• Maintain high standards of confidentiality and data ethics in a humanitarian context.

Skills

• Basic research and analytical skills.
• To find relevant information, conduct qualitative analysis and basic quantitative analysis and synthesize large amounts of information into clear, actionable insights. Also to research existing projects and budgets to help estimate costs of WASH improvements to health care facilities.
• Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.
• To gain an understanding of key public health interventions and programs; to identify vulnerabilities and opportunities and to make recommendations based on the data and trends.
• Excellent communication skills.
• To summarize complex information into clear deliverables, etc.
• Experience in creating briefs or presentations to capture key findings or recommendations.
• Data management and organization skills.
• To manage the various data gathered to allow for easy access and use of the information and ensure attention to detail for organizing the information.
