    Description

New York Disaster & Interfaith Services (NYDIS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, faith-based federation that brings together faith communities, human service providers, and charitable organizations to work in partnership. NYDIS inspires, connects, and equips faith communities to serve our neighbors in times of crisis and suffering, by building pathways to recovery, resilience and social justice. Our vision is a world where all people can mitigate or recover from crisis and thrive—with justice, dignity, and the unwavering certainty that they are valued and cared for unconditionally.

NYDIS seeks a creative, highly motivated graduate-level intern to support and advance its Faith Sector Resilience initiatives. The Intern will be supervised by NYDIS’ Director of Faith Sector Resilience to support outreach and community engagement, coordinate program logistics, and assist with program execution and evaluation to strengthen disaster readiness among NYC faith communities in under-resourced neighborhoods. This internship is designed for master’s or doctoral students seeking 1) applied experience in emergency management, climate adaptation and community engagement; 2) portfolio-ready communication materials; 3) cross-sector exposure to public, community, and faith-based networks; and 4) meaningful community impact.

    Duties include:

    • Serve in a NYC–based hybrid role over a three-month period (May–July 2026), working 24hrs per week.
    • Support engagement of NYC religious leaders around disaster preparedness and climate resiliency.
    • In collaboration with the Director of Faith Sector Resilience, coordinate trainings, events, and house of worship climate resilience audits, including scheduling, registrations, and evaluations.
    • Coordinate with key partners on climate resilience, climate justice advocacy, and disaster services initiatives to support program coordination and resource sharing.
    • Support NYDIS’ Communications Manager in design communication resources for e-newsletters, program flyers, social media graphics, posters, and educational materials.
    • Create and edit engaging video content for social media and website platforms
    • Update religious (lay & ordained) leader database by performing accurate data entry and regular data cleaning
    • Other duties as assigned by senior staff.

    Qualifications include:

    • Be NYC-based and currently enrolled in a graduate program (e.g., MPH, MPA, MSW, MDiv, MUP, Environmental Studies, Urban Planning, Public Policy, Nonprofit Management, Theology, or a related field)
    • Strong interest in climate resilience, emergency management, or environmental justice
    • Exceptional writing and presentation skills
    • Portfolio showcasing engaging storytelling across social media and outreach materials
    • Experience with stakeholder engagement or community organizing in New York City
    • Proven ability to meet tight deadlines independently while contributing positive energy to a small team
    • Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings or weekends
    • Fluency in Spanish preferred.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Outlook, PowerPoint, Canva, Wufoo, social media and video editing software
