Join Women in Leadership (WIL Uganda) and help deliver adult literacy programmes and school-based education initiatives in a rural Ugandan community.

    About the Organisation

Women in Leadership (WIL Uganda) is a grassroots, women-led organisation based in Busembatia, Eastern Uganda.

Our mission: to dismantle inequality and empower women and girls to exercise their rights, build economic independence, and lead within their communities.

    About the Role

As a Women’s Literacy & Education Intern, you will support our adult literacy programme by designing and delivering interactive learning sessions for women in the community.

You will also lead a “Book Event” programme across local secondary schools to promote literacy and confidence among young people.

This is a hands-on role where you will design and deliver sessions — not just observe.

    • Design and deliver adult literacy sessions for women
    • Facilitate interactive learning workshops (reading, writing, confidence building)
    • Deliver “Book Event” sessions in local secondary schools
    • Adapt teaching materials to suit different literacy levels
    • Work closely with local staff and community leaders
    • Support programme development and outreach

    What You’ll Gain:

    • Practical teaching and facilitation experience in an international setting
    • Experience working in community-based education programmes
    • Leadership and communication skills
    • A professional reference and certificate upon completion

    • Willingness to adapt to rural community life
    • Laptop required for placement work

    Location & Living

    • You will live in Busembatia village (Eastern Uganda) and be fully immersed in community life.
    • Accommodation is provided in safe, shared volunteer housing.

    Girls Who Lead Global Bursary

We believe opportunity should not depend on income.

10% of every volunteer’s fundraising contributes to the Girls Who Lead Global Bursary, which fully funds a young woman (18–30, UK-based) from a low-income or underrepresented background to join the programme.

    Every cohort funds the next.
