    Description

Film Production & Photography Program β€” Art in Tanzania

Tanzania is telling its stories on screen. Help tell them well.

East Africa has a film industry on the rise β€” local television productions, international documentaries, music videos, and community storytelling projects are all part of a fast-growing creative economy that is finding its voice and its audience. Tanzania may be competing with the established powerhouse of Nollywood, but it has something Nollywood doesn't: Tanzania's landscapes, communities, wildlife, and cultural depth are unlike anywhere else on the continent.

Art in Tanzania is involved in new film and media productions every day. We are looking for skilled interns and production professionals who can contribute to that work β€” and help train our local team in the process.

    About the Program

Since 1996, Art in Tanzania has placed approximately 250 participants annually in hands-on community programmes across Tanzania. Our Film Production & Photography Program is one of our most creative and dynamic placements β€” embedding you in active local television productions, international documentaries, and music video projects from day one.

This task is not a passive observation placement. You will be on set, behind the camera, in the edit suite, and on the ground β€” contributing real skills to real productions in one of Africa's most visually extraordinary environments.

    Roles & Disciplines

We work across the full production pipeline and welcome applicants across a wide range of film and media specialisations:

    🎬 Creative & Production

    • Scriptwriting
    • Directing
    • Cinematography
    • Production assistance and coordination
    • Project management

    πŸŽ™οΈ Technical Crew

    • Lighting
    • Sound recording and design
    • Post-production editing
    • Photography

    πŸ’„ On-Set Support

    • Makeup and styling
    • Other essential film crew roles

    πŸ“± Digital & Social Media

    • Social media content creation and management
    • Digital marketing for film projects and programme visibility
    • Advocacy content for Art in Tanzania's channels, including a Facebook audience of over 50,000 followers

If your specialisation sits somewhere between these categories β€” or beyond them β€” get in touch. We work flexibly and value creative professionals from all corners of the industry.

    The Tanzanian Film Landscape

Tanzania's film industry is young, ambitious, and growing fast. Local productions are reaching wider audiences, international documentary makers are increasingly drawn to East Africa as a setting, and the demand for skilled crew β€” both local and international β€” is rising steadily.

Working here gives you something that a placement in an established European or North American film market cannot: the chance to be part of an industry at a formative moment, where your contribution carries genuine weight, and where the stories being told are both urgent and underrepresented on the world stage.

    Training & Knowledge Transfer

Beyond your own production work, training is a core part of this programme. We are actively developing the skills of our Tanzanian team β€” and interns play a central role in that. Whether you are teaching lighting techniques, sharing editing workflows, or demonstrating social media production methods, you are building capacity that outlasts your placement and strengthens the industry for the long term.

You will work within a multi-disciplinary production team of international and Tanzanian professionals at different stages of their careers β€” a creative environment that is collaborative, fast-moving, and genuinely stimulating.

    How It Works

Hours: 6–8 hours per day, Monday to Friday Start date: Flexible β€” the programme runs continuously year-round Duration: Adjustable to your academic schedule and personal goals Group size: 15–40 international students at any time, drawn from 1,000+ partner universities worldwide

Your placement is fully tailored to your discipline, experience level, and creative interests. Film production, photography, media studies, journalism, communications, digital marketing, and related fields are all excellent fits.

    Life in Tanzania

If ever there was a placement where the location is part of the creative opportunity, this is it. Tanzania's landscapes β€” Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, the Serengeti, the coast, the villages β€” are among the most visually compelling on earth. The culture is rich, the light is extraordinary, and the stories waiting to be told are everywhere.

Affordable, sustainable safaris and tours are available for you and visiting friends or family.

    Funding

Erasmus+ funding may be available for this placement. Speak with your student office about grant options that could fully or partially fund this experience.
