    Description

    Gain experience in a variety of habitat restoration activities including shoreline stabilization, invasive species management, and native plant propagation!

    NEIWPCC is seeking a seasonal intern to assist the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve (HRNERR) stewardship team in the field and office. This intern will work alongside full-time staff to assess, protect, manage, and restore priority Hudson River Estuary habitats, including shorelines, tidal wetlands, and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) beds. For all tasks, ample training will be provided. Responsibilities will be delegated with the goal of developing the intern’s skillsets and knowledge to provide a valuable experience.

    What You’ll Do

    • Implement, monitor, and adaptatively manage habitat restoration and enhancement projects.
    • Support water quality, vegetation, and wildlife monitoring in upland, tidal wetland, shoreline, and shallow water habitats.
    • Monitor and maintain greenhouse and nursery plants.
    • Conduct outreach and help coordinate volunteer stewardship activities.
    • Assist with data entry and analysis.
    • Develop stewardship content and updates for the reserve website.

    What You’ll Bring

    • At least two years of college with a major in biology, ecology, natural resources management, environmental science, or related field.
    • Interest in responsible management of upland and coastal resources while applying the best available science to maintain and restore healthy, productive, and resilient ecosystems.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Ability to respectfully engage with a diverse team of collaborators.
    • Knowledge of the flora, fauna, and habitats of the Hudson River Valley.

    Logistics

    This is a seasonal NEIWPCC position based out of NYSDEC’s Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve in Staatsburg, NY. The position may also work part-time out of the Stony Kill Farm Environmental Education Center in Wappingers Falls, NY. This position is not eligible for telework. Position requires frequent day trips throughout the Hudson River Estuary, occasionally working under adverse conditions in outdoor settings, for which the ability to swim and lift up to 50 lbs is required. Evening and weekend work may be required. A valid driver’s license and access to own transportation are required.

    Pay

    The intern will work approximately 37.5 hours per week from May to November. Time off by prior arrangement can be accommodated. The anticipated hourly payrate for this position is $19.00.
