    Description

Secure World Foundation Opens Applications for 2026 Space Sustainability Research Fellowships

Secure World Foundation (SWF) is pleased to announce the 2026 call for Space Sustainability Research Fellowships, supporting in-depth research on key challenges shaping the future of space governance and sustainability.

The fellowship program is designed to advance understanding of fundamental concepts underpinning space sustainability by engaging researchers in focused, policy-relevant work. In 2026, the selected Fellows will explore the theme: Evaluating Models for Private Sector Participation in International Governance for Space Safety and Space Traffic Coordination.

SWF will select two Fellows for up to four-month appointments beginning in summer 2026. Fellows may work in-person at SWF offices in Broomfield, Colorado, or Washington, DC, or participate remotely. The program is open to applicants worldwide.

Fellows will conduct original research examining how existing international governance models—from sectors such as aviation, maritime operations, and telecommunications—can inform more effective multi-stakeholder approaches to space traffic coordination and space safety. The research will culminate in a publishable report and executive summary, contributing to ongoing global discussions on sustainable and responsible space activities.

Fellows will receive an honorarium of $2,500 USD upon successful submission and acceptance of their research deliverables.

Applications require a short research proposal (up to 400 words) and a current CV. Selected Fellows will produce a final report of professional quality and are encouraged to present their findings to the broader space community.

🗓 Application deadline: 9:00 AM (MDT), Monday, June 1, 2026
