JOB SUMMARY
We’re looking for a Typography & Graphic Design Intern who cares deeply about type, layout, and clarity of communication. This role is ideal for someone who believes that great design doesn’t just look good — it reads well.
You’ll support the design team on a range of brand and marketing materials, with a particular focus on text-heavy layouts and ensuring the highest level of polish in both visual presentation and written content.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and refine layouts for presentations, marketing materials, digital assets, and internal and external communications.
- Develop strong typographic hierarchy and systems for text-forward projects.
- Partner with designers and stakeholders to ensure messaging and layout work seamlessly together.
- Help maintain brand consistency across visual and written communication.
- Create digital artwork such as icons and logos to support a variety of materials, including reports, e-newsletters, social media content, presentations, and other communications.
- Present design concepts and mockups to stakeholders and incorporate feedback.
- Review all copy for spelling, grammar, clarity, and consistency before finalization.
- Flag awkward phrasing, inconsistencies, and unclear messaging.
- Suggest light edits to improve readability and flow while preserving voice.
- Manage time effectively to meet established deadlines.
- Support additional graphic design needs within the department as required.
- Learn, apply, and maintain The Salvation Army’s brand standards.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinate and communicate effectively with Salvation Army Officers, the NCRD Communications team, and departmental staff to ensure project execution.
- Support departmental operations by performing additional duties as assigned by team members.
- Demonstrate reliability through consistent attendance, punctuality, and professional conduct.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Currently enrolled in the third or fourth year of a Graphic Design, Visual Communication, or related field, and eligible to receive college credit for the position.
- Solid understanding of basic layout, design principles, and print production processes.
- Proficient in creating social media content.
- Strong typographic foundation (hierarchy, spacing, readability, attention to detail).
- A portfolio demonstrating thoughtful layout and text-driven design.
- Exceptional attention to detail and a demonstrated ability to identify typos, inconsistencies, and errors in written content.
- Strong command of written English.
- Comfortable diplomatically questioning unclear wording or suggesting improvements.
- Advanced skills in digital design software, including Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), OneDrive, Dropbox, and other commonly used digital collaboration tools.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Proficient in Adobe InDesign
- Proficient in Adobe Photoshop
- Proficient in Adobe Illustrator
- Ability to perform basic layouts and design
- Excellent communication skills; including organizational, proofreading, editing, and problem-solving skills
- Proficient with exporting as various file types
