    For nearly 30 years, Community Reading Buddies (CRB) has been mobilizing Bay Area high schoolers to mentor younger students in literacy and ignite them with a passion for reading. In turn, our Youth Mentors are trained in social-emotional skills that prepare them to become successful, independent adults.     About the Position:

    Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the Program Intern will support the administration of CRB’s summer reading program, which is expected to serve over 200 students altogether over the course of our eight-week summer program. The intern position will run from mid-May to August and will work primarily with the Program Manager and the rest of the Program team to assist in planning and managing the CRB reading sessions.

    Job Responsibilities:

    • Attend at least 2 virtual or in-person reading session in Oakland starting on June 1, 2 times per week (Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday)
    • Assist program coordinators in planning and facilitating Youth Mentor trainings that will take place during the week of June 1, 2026
    • Assist program coordinators in organizing materials and activities for the data and documentation of the summer program (making sure documents are updated at all times, exporting data, checking volunteer hours against attendance, checking mandatory volunteer file uploading, etc.)
    • Maintain Youth Mentor (high-school volunteers) and buddy (elementary students) attendance records and follow up on absences
    • Contact participant families as needed throughout the program with questions or concerns
    • Observe and support Youth Mentor and Buddy pairs during program sessions as needed
    • Help facilitate small group discussions with Youth Mentors during the program sessions
    • Help with tech issues during reading sessions and set up of chromebooks
    • Attend weekly team meeting via Zoom
    • Other duties and tasks as assigned

    Requirements:

    • Have a passion for reading, literacy, and working with youth
    • Some experience working with children, preferably at the lower elementary school level
    • Ability to communicate well with teens, young children, and parents
    • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
    • Good organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks at once
    • Familiarity with Zoom and Google Suite
    • Located in Bay Area, CA with ability to commute to Oakland, Richmond, or San Francisco for in-person reading sessions
    • Ability to work part-time

    Benefits

    Earn 1 hour of sick time for every 30 hours worked

    Eligible for end-of-season bonus for working in-person reading sessions (if you attend 80% of your sessions for the season)
