    About the Organisation

Women in Leadership (WIL Uganda) is a grassroots, women-led organisation based in Busembatia, Eastern Uganda.

Our mission: to dismantle inequality and empower women and girls to exercise their rights, build independence, and lead within their communities.

    About the Role

This is a high-responsibility internship for individuals interested in careers in international development, fundraising, or the non-profit sector.

As a Grant Writing & Fundraising Intern, you will support the development and delivery of WIL’s fundraising strategy, working across grants, partnerships and campaigns.

You will gain direct experience in how small NGOs secure funding and sustain programmes in real-world contexts.

This role includes mentorship and guidance from the organisation’s leadership team, including direct support in developing your grant writing skills.

    What You’ll Do:

    • Research and identify relevant grant opportunities (UK and international)
    • Draft and support submission of grant applications
    • Contribute to fundraising campaigns and strategy
    • Support outreach to potential partners (NGOs, corporates, foundations)
    • Assist in organising small fundraising initiatives or events
    • Contribute to donor communications and reporting

    What You’ll Gain:

    • Practical, hands-on experience in grant writing and fundraising
    • Insight into NGO strategy, budgeting and programme design
    • One-to-one mentorship and feedback on your writing
    • Experience working directly with senior leadership in a grassroots organisation
    • A professional reference and certificate upon completion
    • Opportunity to gain academic credit (we work with your university)
    • Strong experience for careers in international development, policy, or non-profits

    Requirements

    • Enrolled in or completed a university degree
    • Strong writing and research skills
    • Interest in fundraising, grant writing, or NGO development

    • All meals are included Monday–Friday during placement.
    • During weekends, you can travel to nearby Jinja, known for activities such as rafting, kayaking and cultural experiences.

    Girls Who Lead Global Bursary

We believe opportunity should not depend on income.

10% of every volunteer’s fundraising contributes to the Girls Who Lead Global Bursary, which fully funds a young woman (18–30, UK-based) from a low-income or underrepresented background to join the programme.

    Every cohort funds the next.
