    Description

Artificial Intelligence Program β€” Art in Tanzania

AI is reshaping the world. Help make sure Tanzania isn't left behind.

Across the globe, artificial intelligence is transforming how organisations work β€” how they manage data, communicate with communities, raise funds, and deliver services. In Tanzania, that transformation is just beginning. The NGOs, schools, and businesses that get ahead of it now will be better positioned to serve their communities for decades to come.

Art in Tanzania is moving early β€” and we need people who know how to make AI work in the real world to help us do it.

    About the Program

Since 1996, Art in Tanzania has placed approximately 250 participants annually in hands-on community programmes across Tanzania. Our AI & Community Development Program is one of our newest initiatives β€” created to bring practical artificial intelligence capability into the heart of our NGO operations, community outreach, and partner organisations.

This is not a theoretical programme. You will train real teams, implement real tools, and leave behind lasting capability that continues to serve Tanzanian communities long after your placement ends.

    What You'll Do

Your placement is tailored to your technical background, skills, and interests. Work spans four interconnected areas:

πŸ€– Team Training & AI Capacity Building Train Art in Tanzania's local NGO team to integrate AI tools into their everyday work β€” from content creation and communication to project planning and reporting. You will design training sessions, build confidence with new tools, and help embed AI into workflows that previously relied entirely on manual effort.

🏫 AI in Schools & Companies Deliver AI literacy training in Tanzanian schools and local companies β€” introducing students, teachers, and business professionals to AI concepts and practical tools in accessible, contextually relevant ways. This is foundational digital transformation work at the community level.

πŸ“Š Data Analysis & Community Projects Apply data analysis skills to community development projects β€” helping organisations in health, education, and social work make better, evidence-based decisions. In environments with limited analytical capacity, even basic data work can have an outsized impact.

🎨 AI in Digital Transformation & Design Support Art in Tanzania's digital presence by implementing AI tools in content creation, social media management, and design workflows β€” helping the team produce higher-quality communications at greater speed and scale. Our Facebook audience of over 50,000 followers means your work reaches a significant public immediately.

🌐 Remote & On-Site NGO Support: Both remote and on-site placements are available. Remote interns can support partner organisations with AI applications for fundraising, data management, and social media β€” extending the programme's reach beyond Tanzania's borders.

    Why This Matters

Tanzania's NGO sector faces a familiar challenge: significant community need, limited organisational capacity, and pressure to do more with less. AI tools β€” applied thoughtfully and taught effectively β€” can genuinely shift that equation. Your role is not just to use these tools yourself, but to transfer the knowledge so the team can continue without you.

That kind of capacity-building is one of the most valuable contributions an intern can make.

    Structure & Supervision

Academic-level team leaders supervise your placement daily, and a weekly planning and reporting system keeps your work structured and on track. You will work as part of a multi-professional team of international students and local volunteers β€” bringing together technical, educational, communications, and community development skills to tackle problems collaboratively.

The internship outcome is direct: real experience implementing AI in a developing-country context where resources are constrained, adaptability is essential, and the stakes for getting it right are genuinely high.

    How It Works

Hours: 6–8 hours per day, Monday to Friday Start date: Flexible β€” the programme runs continuously year-round Duration: Adjustable to your academic schedule and goals Format: On-site in Tanzania or remote β€” discuss options when you apply Group size: 15–40 international students at any time, drawn from 400+ partner universities worldwide

Your placement is tailored to your background and interests. Computer science, data science, AI and machine learning, digital communications, education technology, information systems, and related fields are all strong fits β€” but motivated students from any discipline with practical AI skills are welcome.

    Life in Tanzania

For on-site participants, Tanzania offers an experience that goes far beyond the work. Rich culture, iconic wildlife, extraordinary landscapes, and one of Africa's most dynamic and fast-growing economies β€” all part of your daily context. Affordable, sustainable safaris and tours are available for you and visiting friends or family.

    Funding

Erasmus+ funding may be available for this placement. Speak with your student office about grant options that could fully or partially fund this experience.
