    Description

Physical Therapy Program β€” Art in Tanzania

Two placements in one: community physiotherapy in village dispensaries and sports physio at Tanzania's top football clubs.

Few physiotherapy internships offer this range. In the same programme, you will work with patients in under-resourced village dispensaries and hospitals, and provide sports physiotherapy support to athletes at the Tanzanian Youth Football Academy and leading football clubs in the Dar es Salaam region.

The clinical challenges are real, the caseload is meaningful, and the skills you develop here will stay with you throughout your career.

    About the Program

Since 1996, Art in Tanzania has placed approximately 250 participants annually in hands-on community programmes across Tanzania. Our Physical Therapy Program is a clinical placement that spans two distinct and complementary settings β€” community health and sports performance β€” giving you the breadth of experience that a single-site placement cannot match.

This programme is designed for physiotherapy students and graduates who want supervised clinical practice in a developing-country context, where resourcefulness, adaptability, and patient-centred care are tested in ways that routine placements at home rarely demand.

    Two Tracks, One Placement

    πŸ₯ Community & Clinical Physiotherapy

At the village level, local dispensaries identify and refer patients with ongoing physiotherapy needs. You will work directly with these patients, delivering hands-on treatment and supporting rehabilitation in community settings where access to specialist care is limited and the impact of your presence is immediate.

At the hospital level, clinical-based physiotherapy is delivered in larger facilities β€” providing exposure to a wider range of conditions, equipment, and multidisciplinary clinical environments.

Typical patient groups include individuals recovering from injury, stroke, and musculoskeletal conditions, as well as patients with disabilities and chronic physical health needs. In many cases, you will be the primary physiotherapy support a patient receives.

    ⚽ Sports Physiotherapy

Work alongside coaches and athletic staff at the Tanzanian Youth Football Academy and leading football clubs in the Dar es Salaam region β€” providing sports physiotherapy support that includes injury assessment, rehabilitation, and performance maintenance for competitive athletes.

This program is a rare opportunity for physiotherapy students with a sports focus to gain practical experience in a professional sporting environment, in a country where football is a serious national passion and the talent pipeline is genuinely exciting.

    The Clinical Reality

Tanzania's health system operates under significant resource constraints. Equipment is limited, caseloads are high, and clinical decision-making often happens with less diagnostic support than you would have at home. That environment is demanding β€” and one of the most powerful learning contexts a physiotherapy student can experience.

You will develop clinical confidence, cultural competence, and problem-solving skills that are difficult to acquire anywhere else. And the patients you treat will remind you, every day, of why you chose this profession.

    Structure & Supervision

Your progress is monitored through a weekly planning and reporting system, ensuring your placement stays on track and delivers the documented clinical hours and outcomes your university requires. Your placement is tailored to your academic background, clinical experience, and professional interests.

    How It Works

Hours: 6–8 hours per day, Monday to Friday Start date: Flexible β€” the programme runs continuously year-round Duration: Adjustable to your academic and clinical placement requirements Group size: 15–40 international students at any time, drawn from 1,000+ partner universities worldwide

This programme is designed for physiotherapy and physical therapy students and graduates at any stage of their training. Sports science and rehabilitation students with a physiotherapy focus are also welcome.

    Life in Tanzania

Beyond your clinical hours, Tanzania delivers an experience unlike anywhere else. Dar es Salaam is one of East Africa's most dynamic cities, and the country beyond it β€” Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, the Serengeti β€” is extraordinary. Affordable, sustainable safaris and tours are available for you and visiting friends or family.

    Funding

Erasmus+ funding may be available for this placement. Speak with your student office about grant options that could fully or partially fund this experience.
