    Description

    Summary

Art in Tanzania champions sustainable, community-led solutions across Tanzania — educating households on solar energy, composting, climate resilience, and environmental risk.

    Details

Art in Tanzania has been transforming communities since 1996. Our placements attract around 250 participants each year, offering students genuine hands-on experience working in developing communities across Africa. Alongside your studies, you will gain an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime immersion in Tanzanian culture, breathtaking natural landscapes, and extraordinary wildlife.

Our Environmental Advocacy programme delivers a broad range of environmental development activities tailored to the real needs of local communities.

Tanzanian households face significant economic barriers to adopting greener solutions. Currently, fewer than half have access to a toilet — our interns are actively developing affordable, sustainable alternatives, including dry toilets and bio-filter septic systems. We also champion household-level solutions in water purification, composting, sustainable cooking fuels, and the establishment of tree and bamboo nurseries.

Educating communities about climate change, disaster risk, and mitigation is central to our mission. Responsible wildlife safaris and eco-tourism are equally vital — generating essential funding for NGO operations and conservation work.

Your daily placement is supervised by academic-level team leaders and supported through a structured weekly planning and reporting system, ensuring you achieve your goals and grow professionally. The programme's core outcome is developing the confidence and skills to apply your education effectively in a resource-constrained, real-world setting — working alongside international peers in one of the world's most dynamic emerging economies.

Work hours are 6–8 hours per day, Monday through Friday. All programmes are ongoing, so start and end dates are fully flexible and shaped around your background, experience, and interests. Daily tasks span practical fieldwork, planning, reporting, and social media visibility.

You and your friends are welcome to enjoy affordable, eco-friendly safaris and tours during your stay.

We typically host 15–40 students at a time, drawn from over 400 partner universities worldwide and representing a wide range of professional backgrounds.

Erasmus+ funding may be available for your placement in Tanzania — speak to your student office about grant options.
