According to estimates from the World Travel and Tourism Council, tourism contributed 10.2% to global GDP in 2017. Tourism has regenerated the economies of many underdeveloped nations thanks to its widespread effects.

As significant as tourism's contribution to development is, it has also contributed to a number of issues, including economic dependency, environmental harm, cultural alienation, and social unrest. People are now seeking out more responsible vacations and opting for sustainable tourism options after learning about the effects of tourism. Sustainable tourism is defined as "tourism that respects both local people and the traveler, cultural legacy, and ecology"; this idea has gained so much traction that some claim it will become the norm in ten years.

In order to demonstrate the authenticity of sustainable tourism, clearly defined standards must be applied. These principles also provide benefits for the socio-cultural, environmental, and economic facets of tourism development. To maintain long-term sustainability, these three characteristics must be properly balanced.

In order to be sustainable, tourism should include:

    • respecting the sociocultural authenticity of the host communities, taking into account their built environment, cultural legacy, and traditional values, and promoting intercultural tolerance.
    • having a conscience while traveling, using resources wisely, and making a positive impact on biodiversity and natural heritage preservation.
    • guaranteeing long-term economic viability and delivering socioeconomic gains to all stakeholders and host communities.

In order to enhance biodiversity, conservation, social welfare, and other aspects of sustainable tourism, tourist planning and management must take an integrated approach.

With the growing aspect in sustainable tourism, there has been growing recognition on importance of combining the needs of traditional urban management such as transport, marketing, economic development, etc. with the need to plan for tourism.

Why Nepal? Why EcoHomeStay Nepal Volunteers ?

Nepal is one of the most beautiful, culturally rich and welcoming country in the world. Nepal is very rich in diversity where temperature and culture differs every minutes of distance . It is home to Mount Everest, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, and an astonishingly beautiful and diverse landscape, ranging from the well-known peaks of the Himalayas to the low-lying regions of the Terai-Madesh. The Nepali people are as diverse as the geography, with over 70 languages or dialects and scores of traditional festivals celebrated throughout the year.

However, Nepal is among the poorest and least developed countries in the world with low rates of literacy, high rates of poverty and a persistent gender imbalance. The government is frequently unable to provide adequate education and health facilities throughout the country and both urban and rural areas are forced to live without the necessary resources to promote the growth and development of their communities:

    • 42% of the population live below the poverty line on less than $240 a year
    • 15,000 orphans are living on Kathmandu's streets
    • 42% of the population of Nepal are unemployed
    • 51% illiteracy rate throughout Nepal
    1. 5 doctors are available for each 100,000 inhabitants
