    Description

The Gender Equality Law Center (GELC) is a not‑for‑profit law firm dedicated to advancing gender, racial, and economic justice. We provide pro bono legal representation to low‑ and modest‑income individuals whose opportunities to learn, work, and thrive have been limited by discrimination. Our core areas of focus include sexual harassment and sexual violence prevention, redressing pregnancy and caregiver discrimination, and Protecting LGBTQ+ rights. Across all matters, GELC seeks not only damages for our clients but also systemic reforms and innovative legal strategies that expand protections for vulnerable communities.

GELC invites proposals from current and former law students who are able to secure external fellowship funding for one‑ or two‑year placements. Fellows will design and execute projects that strengthen legal protections for workers, students, and others who have experienced gender‑based, racial, or economic injustice in workplaces, educational institutions, and other public or private settings. While much of GELC’s work is litigation‑centered, we also welcome proposals focused on expanding access to legal information, particularly for vulnerable communities in New York, or on advancing legislative and policy reforms.

In addition to excellent research and writing skills, candidates must demonstrate a deep commitment to gender justice, a strong interest in impact‑driven legal advocacy, and an understanding of the barriers low‑income individuals face in securing representation. Because their cases often involve limited economic damages and complex legal issues, these clients are frequently unable to obtain assistance from private counsel or from government‑funded legal services organizations. Fellows at GELC are needed help fill this critical gap.
