    Position: Director of Communications

    Reports To: President & CEO

    Exempt/Non-Exempt: Exempt

    Work Schedule: The typical work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, generally between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Pacific. Schedule flexibility is required as this position is expected to attend and support occasional evening and weekend Club events, community engagements, special events, and training.

    Salary Range: $75,000–$78,000 DOE

    POSITION SUMMARY

    The Boys & Clubs of South County is seeking an experienced, creative, and collaborative Director of Communications to join the team. Reporting to the President & CEO, this position will develop and implement a comprehensive, integrated communications and marketing strategy that enhances the Club's visibility, strengthens relationships with donors and partners, and advances the Club’s mission and strategic goals. In partnership with the President & CEO and Marketing & Communications Committee, this position will be responsible for developing and executing strategic communications strategies and marketing campaigns in support of Club programming and leadership, fundraising, special events, and strategic partnerships.

    The Director of Communications will oversee and manage the Club’s day-to-day communications and marketing activities, including press and media outreach, editorial content calendar, donor communications, email and social media, graphic design, photo and video content, and website updates. This role is a strategic leader responsible for driving strategic messaging, media, and digital storytelling that elevates brand awareness, strengthens partnerships, and advances the Club’s mission across the organization and in the local community.

    The ideal candidate for this position is collaborative, organized, detail-oriented, and passionate about storytelling and communications. They will be well-versed in communications best practices, with experience in developing strategic and effective marketing plans, executing these plans to meet objectives, and problem-solving independently. Working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, the Director of Communications will need to be highly self-motivated, creative, and personally accountable. This position may be based in Chula Vista or Imperial Beach, CA, and may require travel to Club sites, events, conferences, training, and Club events. Greater San Diego-based hybrid candidates may be considered.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Strategic Communications & Brand Alignment
    • Develop and execute a comprehensive, integrated communications and marketing strategy aligned with the Club’s strategic plan.
    • Ensure consistent brand messaging, voice, and visual identity across all communications, assets, and platforms.
    • Create and implement annual communications and marketing plans with measurable goals and performance metrics.
    • Collaborate with President & CEO and Director of Development to align messaging with organizational priorities and fundraising initiatives.

    Marketing & Community Outreach

    • Lead marketing campaigns to increase local and regional awareness of the Club’s programs, events, and community impact.
    • Develop marketing and fundraising materials to support membership recruitment, donor engagement, and partnership development.
    • Represent the Club at community events and build relationships with other youth-serving organizations, members, parents, families, funders, and community organizations
    • Support outreach initiatives that expand the Club’s visibility and brand across South County and the greater San Diego area.

    Media Engagement & External Relations

    • Serve as primary media contact for the Club, its programming, and its events.
    • Develop and cultivate relationships with local and regional media outlets and reporters, community leaders, and local officials.
    • Draft press releases, media alerts, public statements, and talking points for Club Leadership, Board of Directors, Site Leaders, and designated program staff.
    • Support crisis communications planning and response in coordination with the President & CEO and Board Leadership.
    • Support youth-led media initiatives and digital literacy programming where appropriate.

    Storytelling & Impact Communication

    • Capture and share compelling stories that highlight youth success, program outcomes, and community impact.
    • Create opportunities to elevate youth voice through digital media, storytelling, and public platforms.
    • Ensure youth perspectives are authentically represented in external communications.
    • Develop impact reports, newsletters, presentations, cases for support, and donor communications.
    • Collaborate with program teams to gather data, insights, and testimonials that demonstrate measurable program outcomes.

    Event Promotion & Management

    • Lead promotional strategies for fundraising events, community celebrations, and special initiatives.
    • Develop promotional timelines, digital campaigns, and event materials in support of Club and donor events.
    • Develop sponsorship materials and ensure sponsor deliverables are executed as agreed upon.
    • Support donor cultivation and stewardship through impactful pre- and post-event communications.

    Graphic Design & Creative Assets

    • Oversee the development of high-quality creative assets and marketing materials, including flyers, brochures, reports, digital graphics, videos, branded merchandise, and presentations.
    • Maintain brand standards and templates across the organization.
    • Manage relationships with external designers, print vendors, and creative vendors as applicable.

    Digital Marketing & Communications

    • Develop and implement email marketing calendars, campaigns, and digital newsletters.
    • Develop annual social media strategies and editorial content calendars.
    • Manage the Club’s social media presence across platforms.
    • Oversee website management, ensuring content is up-to-date, compelling, mission-aligned, and follows SEO/SEM best practices.
    • Monitor analytics and engagement metrics to optimize digital performance.

    Internal Communications

    • Develop and maintain internal communication systems to ensure staff are informed and aligned on upcoming campaigns, initiatives, and events.
    • Support Leadership communications, organizational updates, and staff engagement efforts.
    • Provide communications training and tools for Club Leadership, Board of Directors, Site Leaders, and designated program staff.

    Compliance, Safety & Privacy

    • Adhere to Boys & Girls Clubs of America safety policies and ethical communication standards.
    • Ensure compliance with media release policies and data privacy standards.
    • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information related to youth, families, and Club staff.

    Team Leadership & Cross-Departmental Collaboration

    • Collaborate with Program, Operations, Development, and Finance teams to align communications strategies with programmatic priorities.
    • Ensure communications and marketing efforts reflect equity, inclusion, and community-centered values.
    • Supervise Communications and Marketing staff or consultants, if applicable.

    QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

    Position Requirements

    • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move throughout office and event environments for extended periods.
    • Ability to lift and carry up to 25–30 pounds (event supplies, donor materials, etc.).
    • Ability to travel locally for meetings, community events, and site visits.
    • Occasional evening and weekend work for events and engagements.
    • Commitment to mission-driven work and the ability to represent the Club with enthusiasm and integrity.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field.
    • Minimum of 5 years of communications or marketing experience and/or prior professional experience in a related field such as public relations, journalism, or fundraising/development.
    • Experience in youth-serving or mission-driven nonprofit organizations preferred.
    • Demonstrated success in developing and implementing strategic, integrated communications and marketing strategies that drive brand awareness, top-of-funnel engagement, and donor retention.
    • Strong knowledge of communications best practices and implementing necessary systems and processes to support an efficient and effective Communications and Marketing operation, including budgeting, calendar planning, performance monitoring and optimization, knowledge management, etc.
    • Experience working with and engaging Board Members and Executive Leadership in communications and marketing efforts.
    • High level of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality with donors, program participants and families, board members, staff, and community partners.
    • Familiarity with the local philanthropic community and funding landscape.

    • Strong management and supervisory skills with the ability to lead and work collaboratively within a team.
    • Ability to work collaboratively, build, and maintain effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders, including Club leadership and staff, board members, community leaders, donors, partner agencies, community groups, and volunteers.
    • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.

    COMPENSATION

    $75,000–$78,000; Salary range is based on qualifications. Paid benefits package including paid vacation, Medical, Vision, dental, 401(k) Plan Investment. Professional development opportunities are available contingent upon funding and approval. This position is classified as exempt and as such, is not eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
