    Director — Full-Time Position

The Houston Museum District Association (HMDA) is entering a pivotal and energizing moment in its evolution. With 19 member institutions welcoming approximately 7 million visitors each year, the District is one of Houston’s most important cultural, educational, and economic assets.

As HMDA strengthens its operational foundation and prepares for strategic growth, we are seeking a dynamic and mission-driven Director to help shape the District’s next chapter. This role is ideal for a collaborative, highly organized leader who thrives in a multifaceted environment and is inspired by the opportunity to support a collective of vibrant museums in a culturally diverse city.

The Director will play a central role in advancing HMDA’s administrative, operational, and strategic priorities—ensuring continuity, strengthening systems, and supporting long-term planning.

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Director provides administrative, operational, and strategic support to the Co-Presidents, Committee Heads, and Board of Directors, while overseeing development, finance, communications, and district-wide coordination.

    • Provide administrative support and assist with special projects, including strategic planning initiatives.
    • Implement Board decisions and track follow-up actions.
    • Manage incoming calls and emails, responding or directing inquiries as appropriate.

    Development

    • Coordinate grant applications and reporting; maintain foundation and funder records.
    • Research and identify new funding opportunities.
    • Manage membership database and related communications.
    • Prepare development materials, correspondence, and reports.

    Finance and Operations

    • Manage vendor relationships, including cost comparisons and contract negotiations.
    • Monitor budgets and support financial tracking and reporting.
    • Liaise with and oversee contract finance officer/bookkeeper.
    • Administer insurance policies and lead the annual renewal process.

    Communications and Marketing

    • Maintain and update the website and social media platforms.
    • Coordinate and manage public communications and marketing efforts.
    • Serve as a liaison with member institutions on marketing and PR opportunities.

    Work Environment

This is a hybrid role with a flexible schedule and occasional in-person engagements in the Houston Museum District and greater Houston area.

Candidates must have reliable access to Wi-Fi, a personal laptop, and transportation for in-person meetings.

    Professional Skills and Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred, or equivalent professional experience.
    • Highly organized, energetic self-starter with a passion for arts and culture.
    • Detail-oriented with strong follow-through and time management skills.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
