Description
The Darien Nature Center, a vibrant community gem, is searching for its next Finance Manager. This part-time position is an integral part of the organization and supports our mission to inspire passion and respect for the natural world through nature education, hands-on experiences in nature, and environmental action and stewardship. The Nature Center offers educational programs, houses a diverse collection of live animals, and hosts events that engage and inform the public.
Reports directly to the Executive Director.
Responsibilities:
General Accounting
- Ensure Accounts Receivable is collected promptly.
- Ensure Accounts Payable are paid in a timely fashion.
- Process payroll for all employees.
- Prepare regular bank reconciliations for all bank and investment accounts.
- Prepare monthly financial reports (balance sheet/income statement) for the Finance Committee.
- Maintain an orderly accounting system and chart of accounts.
- Maintain and manage the constituent database with the Communications Director.
- Manage vendors and perform cash flow analysis.
Budget
- Work with the Executive Director (ED) to develop the operating budget. Oversee the preparation of the budget for Board of Directors approval.
- With the ED, develop measurement reports to assess program success, better understand margins, and track growth and expenses.
- Calculate variances from the budget on a monthly basis.
Program Registration
- Work with the Program Director to set and confirm pricing structure.
- Reconcile and record financial transactions associated with registration to Quickbooks and constituent database.
Compliance and Annual Filings
- Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit
- Preparation of various reports for use in the audit and tax return
- Review nonprofit tax return Form 990
- Comply with local, state, federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
- File Form 1099 Misc with the IRS and required vendors.
Other Duties
- Assist the ED with personnel onboarding and management of training and licensing requirements
- Attend Finance Committee meetings and 1-3 Board meetings a year.
- Provide support for fundraising and community events as needed.
- As special projects arise that require financial review, or have financial implications, take part in the management and execution of tasks as determined by you and the ED.
General
- Work collaboratively with administrative staff, teachers and volunteers to promote open communication, shared problem-solving and team efforts.
- Serve as an ambassador and spokesperson for the Nature Center.
- Attend board meetings as needed.
- Attend and staff DNC fundraising and community events; provide support in advance of events
- General office duties as they arise.
