The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a global network of policy research centers, is seeking a full-time research analyst to work with scholars at Carnegie California on issues of emerging technology, including artificial intelligence, and democracy.

Bringing together experimentation and entrepreneurship with ideas and expertise, Carnegie California uses West Coast ideas to inform power and policy in the 21st century. Carnegie California produces rigorous analysis that informs policy and decisions, focusing on three primary areas: Emerging technologies, where our geographic location and focus on innovation, safety, and the economy, has already impacted legislation and policy; Democratic innovations, where we have developed practical expertise on new democratic processes and the technologies that can enable them; and Trans-Pacific Affairs, where we explore the commercial, political, and diasporic connections between the West Coast of the United States and Asia and Latin America. Running through all three pillars is a focus on subnational affairs.

The Research Analyst will work closely with the Carnegie California’s director and a team of scholars to support ongoing research on AI policy and the economic and social impacts of the frontier technology; support ongoing research on new, innovative practices around democratic deliberation; and to manage the processes around Carnegie California’s signature AI and Global Affairs surveys. 

The successful candidate will have either an undergraduate degree (in international relations, economics, or any similar related field) and 2-3 years of research experience or a graduate degree and approximately 1-2 years of research experience. The candidate is required to have good data and quantitative analyses skills. Excellent skills in the Microsoft Office suite are essential. Skills with design software such as Canva will also be helpful. Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills, and diligence and creativity are required. Applicants should have background in technology policy and/or scholarship on democracy, and the ability to administer ongoing research processes. 

This position is based in Palo Alto, California and follows a hybrid job structure. This position offers an outstanding work environment and generous benefits, including health insurance. The anticipated salary range for this position is $70,000 - $80,000.
