    Job Title: Domestic Worker Organizer

    THE ORGANIZATION: Centro Laboral de Graton (CLG) organizes with day laborers and domestic workers in Sonoma County, California. Our programming includes direct organizing, leadership development, rights education, vocational training, workforce readiness, occupational health and safety training, health access and education, and employment development.

    OUR MISSION: To advance and protect the human, labor and civil rights of immigrant day laborers, domestic workers and their families by promoting participatory democratic leadership and worker solidarity, in order to develop greater opportunities for employment, health, education and civic participation.

    OUR VISION: To promote healthy communities that value inclusion and respect, so that immigrant day laborers, domestic workers and their families may live and work with justice and dignity.

    Reports to: Executive Director

    Position Summary: The Domestic Worker Organizer is responsible for domestic worker organizing, leadership development, rights education, community outreach, job development, skills training, and integration of women into all aspects of CLG programming. The Organizer will develop new member leaders in order to grow domestic worker leadership countywide.

    Hiring, Dispatch and Job Development

    • Assist employers and domestic workers with negotiating work agreements
    • Ensure adherence of the rules and procedures related to the hiring site as accorded by the general assembly and ALMAS
    • Advocate for the needs and rights of domestic workers with employers
    • Collaborate with co-workers to integrate domestic workers into overall workforce programming at the center. This includes but is not limited to: job skill trainings, vocational training, workforce preparation, occupational health and safety trainings, and English language instruction
    • Organize monthly orientation for new domestic worker members
    • Develop and implement marketing plan to create new job opportunities for domestic worker members
    • Document incidents, events, problems and conflicts that occur at the site
    • Assist in mediating and resolving conflicts between domestic workers and employers
    • Maintain and nourish positive community public relations with visitors to the center: neighbors, volunteers, press, medical and legal representatives and other institutions, such as churches, unions, and business

    Outreach and Education

    • Coordinate and implement community outreach and education, and resource provision, to domestic workers regarding their rights as workers, immigrants, and members of the community
    • Cultivate relationships with domestic worker employers and provide educational resources to them such as sample contracts, best practices, and other employment resources
    • Develop creative approaches to provide outreach and education to domestic workers and to domestic worker employers
    • Conduct trainings about labor laws, fair practices and other critical issues affecting domestic workers and their families
    • Work to increase digital literacy skills with members to support field organizing and leadership development.
    • Develop and implement vocational and OSH training programs to increase employment opportunities for women workers (Example - Green Cleaning ,Ergonomics)

    Organizing and Leadership Development

    • Lead and develop opportunities to strengthen individual and group leadership capacities
    • Work with ALMAS (CLG’s domestic worker organizing group) committee to establish clear roles and expectations; assess this work regularly
    • Motivate leaders to participate in, develop, and implement local, statewide, and national campaigns
    • Facilitate dialogue and education to increase domestic workers knowledge and capacity to advocate for human, labor and civil rights
    • Coordinate the participation of domestic workers in local community events
    • Facilitate fundraising efforts with domestic workers to support ALMAS
    • Represent ALMAS with the National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) and the California Domestic Workers Coalition (CDWC) and other movement partners
    • Foster the participation of ALMAS’ leaders within CDWC and NDWA programs and campaigns
    • Provide leadership for local policy fights to protect immigrant communities and lift up labor standards for workers

    Other Duties

    • Prepare daily, weekly and monthly activity and data reports
    • Maintain hiring process manual/handbook for ALMAS/Domestic Workers
    • Participate in weekly staff meetings and/or staff development activities
    • Participate in regular organizing team meetings 2

    Organizer

    • Answer phones/field calls when at worksite
    • Under direction of Executive Director, assist with grant applications, reports and other documentation as needed
    • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include overnight travel, weekends or evenings. Preferred Skills and Qualifications
    • Three or more years of organizing experience in a social justice, labor rights, or immigrant rights organization
    • Experience in planning policy and/or issue campaigns and experience utilizing popular education methodology
    • Strong commitment to and understanding of immigrant worker justice and the labor movement, gender and racial justice, climate justice, and the importance of an intersectional social justice movement
    • Cultural competency to work alongside Latina and indigenous immigrant women from diverse cultures, backgrounds, educational and work experiences.
    • Ability to work effectively within immigrant communities, LGBTQ+ communities, and communities of color
    • Strong interpersonal skills that have forged productive relationships across broad sector lines (clients, staff, funders, donors, community partners, community leaders, public officials, etc.)
    • Able to represent ALMAS/CLG in coalitions with affiliates, organizational partners, community allies and government agencies
    • Prepared to work independently, maintain a work plan for themselves with tools for time management and able to monitor progress. Prepared to provide updates and reports regarding this to their supervisor
    • Able to work collaboratively with a team and to maintain good communication through in-person meetings, e-mail and text messages
    • Advanced fluency in English and Spanish. Able to do translation and interpretation, prepare written materials and make live presentations in both languages
    • Overall high level understanding of social media, electronic media, databases, and standard software
    • Valid California driver’s license, availability of personal vehicle and personal vehicle insurance coverage

    Physical Demands

    Must be able to maneuver throughout the community in various locations of unknown accessibility. Must be able to lift and move paperwork and files, up to 20 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

    Work Environment

    Modular building serves as the office; street corners, fields, woods, wetlands, sidewalks, trails, and all public buildings.

    Compensation

    Hours: Full-time, non-exempt position; occasional weekends and evenings.
