    Description

    Job Description

The DC Tutoring & Mentoring Initiative seeks an energetic, well-organized, self-motivated, dynamic and conscientious “practical idealist” who can inspire others by their actions and words to get involved in our work. The ideal candidate would be a hands-on leader and manager in implementing our goals. They will be part of a 2-person team to lead our Neighborhood Tutoring Teams pilot project.

    About Neighborhood Tutoring Teams (NTT)

DCTMI launched this pilot project in the summer of 2025, with the aim to connect youth who need extra academic support with tutors in their neighborhoods who have flexible schedules and can support students outside of regular school and work hours, especially supporting students who do not have access to enrichment and academic after-school programs.

Imagine groups of 2-4 volunteers and 2-8 public school students who meet once or twice a week at a local library after school for an hour and a half. Each volunteer tutor is paired with one or two students. They get to know one another as people, building a strong and supportive relationship, as well as just providing academic support. They meet each student where they are at academically. They may do some artwork or play a game at the end of each session. In the summer, they continue to work together and enjoy some outdoor activities, too. We hope the full experience feels deeply satisfying to students and volunteers alike, and that the students develop newfound confidence in their ability to succeed at school and in life!

    DC Tutoring & Mentoring Initiative

DCTMI has two big goals, one concrete, the other broader and deeper. Our primary focus to date has been on our concrete goal to get a tutor or mentor for the 2 out of 3 DC students reading below grade level or with other academic or non-academic needs -- approximately 60,000 students. We recruit new volunteers at farmers markets and public events and through social media, employers, religious congregations, and civic organizations. The volunteers are matched with our 50 partner tutoring and mentoring organizations and schools based on when and where they are available, what age group they want to work with, any special skills and preferences, and where they are most needed.

Equally important, our broader goal is to create a civic culture where community members feel a sense of responsibility for and fellowship with one another, regardless of class, race, neighborhood, or ideology and actively work together to tackle the major challenges faced by our communities and the world. In 2025, we plan to lift up this deeper goal and make it integral to our work with volunteers.

NOTE: See background documents referenced under “Document Links” below for a more thorough discussion of our approach and theory of change.

    Qualifications:

You are well-organized and confident in managing volunteers and are a community-oriented person seeking to support youth and build community in DC. You are conscientious and a strong written and verbal communicator. You are comfortable traveling to all parts of the city and are able to acknowledge and address community members’ needs in a respectful, empathetic and timely manner.

    Responsibilities

    You will:

    • Manage volunteer-student pairing
    • Host orientation and training sessions for volunteers
    • Interview and screen volunteers and students, ensuring all necessary steps are completed prior to onboarding
    • Manage and organize volunteer resources and ensure ease of access to both students and tutors
    • Communicate with volunteer tutors, parents, students, and all other stakeholders in a clear, respectful, empathetic and timely manner
    • Support volunteer teams to ensure their success, including finding and making space reservations, hosting additional orientation sessions, and identifying and closing gaps in supplemental resource needs
    • Check in with volunteer teams periodically and incorporate feedback into NTT framework
    • Support students and parents in requesting and obtaining materials and information from schools, teachers, and others
    • Report updates to leadership team on a weekly basis
    • Inform recruitment efforts to create NTT teams in high-need neighborhoods
    • Identify and build partnerships with schools to facilitate new teams
    • Other relevant duties as assigned by leadership team

This role is intended to be initially NTT-focused. Our vision is that as the pilot program progresses to a more community-led format, this role, within reasonable capacity, would transition to supporting the leadership team with the following:

    • Administrative needs, including volunteer matching, textbanking, phonebanking, and phone-line monitoring
    • In-person recruitment activities during weekend mornings and early afternoons, as well as occasional weekdays

SALARY: This position pays $25/hour and is a part-time position, an average of 15-30 hours a week. We hope that as this project expands, this role can become a full-time position with full-time benefits. Part-time positions, including this position, does not offer health or other insurance coverage. Other benefits are offered such as paid time off, vacation days, and 10% weekly paid time for self-care.

HIRING PROCESS: We are a small organization and this role is part of a pilot project. Shortlisted applicants will be contacted for an interview and a hiring announcement will be posted to our LinkedIn page.
