    Description

Whidbey Environmental Action Network (WEAN) is seeking an Engagement Manager to support our mission of protecting ecosystems on Whidbey, Camano, and beyond through civic education, policy advocacy, and litigation. This three quarter-time role will help us educate, engage, and activate community members from across Whidbey and Camano Islands through external communications, public events, and a membership program.

The Engagement Manager supports WEAN through executing public-facing communications, administering the membership program, and coordinating events. They ensure our public presence is consistent, on-brand, and well-timed, and that our membership program infrastructure is organized and reliable.

Working in coordination with senior leadership, the Engagement Manager translates organizational and programmatic priorities into polished, effective communications and offerings. This is an early-career role designed for someone with strong foundational communications skills who wants to grow their expertise in environmental advocacy and campaigning.

    Content & Digital Presence

    • Produce and distribute online newsletters, blog posts, press releases, and social media content—writing, scheduling, and publishing in coordination with programmatic and organizational priorities set by senior leadership.
    • Write and maintain website content, informed by content strategy from senior leadership.
    • Respond to routine public inquiries and route communications to appropriate staff.
    • Market WEAN’s calls to action, events, activities, and fundraising campaigns.
    • Help document and report on WEAN’s activities and members’ experiences.
    • Execute graphic and layout work in Canva, Adobe InDesign, Constant Contact, and similar platforms.

    Member & Event Coordination

    • Design and execute WEAN events focused on member engagement and public engagement.
    • Support the design and execution of WEAN events focused on fundraising, policy advocacy, civic education, and litigation, with direction from senior leadership.
    • Manage and execute the membership program, including outreach, renewals, and communications to grow WEAN’s membership base.
    • Perform member and donor data entry and maintenance in Little Green Light during semi-annual appeals.

    Required Qualifications

This is an early-career role. We are looking for strong foundational skills and a genuine interest in environmental communication—not a complete resume.

    • Strong writing skills across multiple formats: you can write a newsletter, a social post, and a press release, and they each sound right for their medium.
    • Experience supporting or coordinating public-facing events.
    • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines with reliability and follow-through.
    • Proficiency with Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive)—or a demonstrated aptitude to learn.
    • Experience with design or layout tools—Canva, Adobe InDesign, or similar—or a demonstrated aptitude to learn.
    • Experience with email marketing platforms—Constant Contact, Mailchimp, or similar—or a demonstrated aptitude to learn.
    • Genuine interest in environmental advocacy, civic engagement, and nonprofit work.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience managing or contributing to organizational social media accounts in a professional or organizational context.
    • Familiarity with nonprofit CRM or donor management tools (Little Green Light, Salesforce, or similar).
    • Familiarity with Washington State land use, environmental policy, or local government processes, and/or experience reviewing or summarizing government records, meeting minutes, or public agency documents.

    Benefits

Compensation: $30/hour plus pro-rated benefits including technology stipend, wellness stipend, paid vacation, paid sick leave, paid holidays, paid volunteer time, and a one week paid office closure in December.
