    What We Do

    EmpowHer Institute partners with 13 Title I middle and high schools in marginalized communities to deliver our programs to 1,000+ girls and gender expansive youth annually.

    Our in-school academies are fully integrated into the school day as a gender- responsive enrichment class for 7 – 12 graders at our partner school sites, and we also offer a Saturday academy for interested high schoolers who do not attend a partnering school.

    The class is comprised of five primary components:

    • (1) social and emotional learning (SEL) centric curriculum
    • (2) mentorship from professional women
    • (3) social justice awareness and advocacy
    • (4) workforce development
    • (5) field trips and immersive learning programs

    This program aims to empower teen girls by giving them the tools they need to cope with challenges, overcome trauma, engage in school, and remain on track to graduate. The academies provide a safe space where girls share experiences, build relationships, and learn to make informed decisions.

    Position Overview

    EmpowHer Institute has an exciting opportunity for an individual who has a dynamic personality and demonstrated passion for serving youth in marginalized communities.

    We are seeking a part-time Academy Instructor for our middle and high school and academy programs. Academy Instructors will be responsible for facilitating our program curricula to cohorts of 15-20 girls, at multiple sites. Additionally, Academy Instructors will build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders - school administrators, students, parents, and mentors.

    Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Youth Programs, the Academy Instructors will perform the following job duties:

      • Facilitate EmpowHer Girls Academy to cohorts of 15-20 girls, ages 11-14, at partner school sites on weekdays (days and times vary by school site)
      • Facilitate EmpowHer Leaders Academy to cohorts of 15-20 girls, ages 14-18, at a central location on Saturdays
      • Chaperone field trips
      • Utilize gender responsive, trauma-informed, culturally inclusive curriculum provided by EmpowHer Institute
      • Facilitate activities and workshop(s) during the EmpowHer Summer STEM Camp, using EmpowHer Summer STEM Camp curriculum, and provide oversight of campers (this may include 2-5 days of overnight)
      • Create a supportive environment where teen girls feel safe and are comfortable discussing issues that are personal and sensitive

    Program Development/Evaluation

      • Contribute to the revision and development of curricula, as needed
      • Support the delivery of our five-week Summer Social Justice STEM Camp, including facilitation, chaperoning, classroom management, and modeling a
      • Work closely with Director of Programs to evaluate program implementation and/or activities
      • Contribute new ideas to the overall implementation and evaluation of the program/services
      • Collect quantitative and qualitative program data

    Relation Development

      • Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to the workplace values of cultural inclusiveness, gender and racial justice, respect, caring, support, effective communication, teamwork & collaboration, accountability and responsibility; practice these values in relation with internal and external stakeholders
      • Work collaboratively with staff and participate fully in the team process
      • Build positive relationships with stakeholders (school administrators and staff, program participants, parents, mentors and community partners)

    Administrative

      • Communicate with mentors, program participants, parents, and staff regarding the program
      • Track attendance and participation of program participants and mentors
      • Prepare and submit documentation and reports in a timely manner

    Hours/Work Schedule & Requirements:

    1. School Year: August - Mid/June (20 hours per week max, based on assigned duties)
    2. Summertime Participation & Requirements: End of June - Early/August - Participation as an Instructor during the summer is optional. However, if you choose to instruct for the summer schedule, you MUST fulfill the following requirements:
    • Chaperone all required field trips.
    • Supervise, mentor, and provide feedback to youth during each activity.
    • Participate in water-related activities, which include kayaking and snorkeling.
    • Travel using ALL company approved transportation methods, this includes boats of varying sizes, such as smaller, mid-sized, or larger vessels, to ensure a comprehensive and enriching travel experience alongside youth.
    • Staying overnight for one week or less on Catalina Island and/or on college campus is a requirement. This MUST be fulfilled in order to meet the performance expectations associated with this role.
    • Lead activities and engagement exercises.
    • Support workshops and ALL assigned youth engagement programs.

    Qualifications:

    • College: Bachelor’s Degree (preferred, but can be substituted for 5 years of experience)
    • Must pass a LiveScan criminal background check facilitated by the LA County Department of Probation
    • Must submit negative TB test results
    • 2+ years of experience working with teen girls, ages 11-18
    • 2+ years of experience working with marginalized communities
    • 2+ years of experience as an instructor with strong classroom management skills
    • Comfortable facilitating in-person classes with youth, as well as being comfortable using ZOOM for virtual classes when necessary

    Requirements:

    • Must have dependable transportation, as this position requires you to travel to various school locations. You will need to transport program supplies with you, and you must be on time to teach classes at the various school sites.
    • Must be able to work Weekdays 8:00 am – 4:00 pm and Saturday 10 am- 1 pm. You will not work more than 20 hours a week. Overnight stay with accommodations provided during one week of the Summer Camp, as needed (no more than one week).
    • Bilingual (English and Spanish) desirable, but not required
