GRIOT Circle is seeking a dedicated Community and Advocacy Outreach Coordinator to lead the implementation of its new Elder Advocacy Program, an initiative empowering LGBTQIA+ elders of color to engage in civic processes and influence policy at the local and state levels.
This role is central to ensuring the successful delivery of workshops, advocacy actions, and community engagement activities. In addition, this role will consist of building and maintaining community partnerships, expanding organizational visibility, and directly engaging with LGBTQ elders of color to ensure they have access to our programs, resources, and advocacy initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Program Implementation & Coordination
- Plan and execute 6–8 structured advocacy workshops focused on civic engagement, legislative processes, and community organizing
- Coordinate logistics for all program activities, including scheduling, space setup, materials, and accessibility accommodations
- Support the development and distribution of the Elder Advocacy Resource Guide (print and digital)
Participant Engagement
- Recruit and support a cohort of approximately 40 LGBTQIA+ elders of color
- Facilitate consistent participation and retention across the 12-month program
- Provide individualized support to participants engaging in advocacy activities
Advocacy Activities
- Organize and support Elders advocacy actions, including:
- Letter-writing campaigns
- Calls and emails to elected officials
- Testimony preparation and participation in hearings
- Coordinate at least one advocacy visit (Albany or City Hall), including logistics and participant preparation
Partnership Management
- Serve as primary liaison for partner organizations (e.g., advocacy, legal, and community groups)
- Coordinate partner-led workshops and ensure alignment with program goals
- Maintain clear communication regarding deliverables and scheduling
Tracking & Reporting
- Track and document program outcomes, including:
- Workshop attendance
- Advocacy actions (target: 80+ documented actions)
- Participant engagement levels
- Prepare internal reports and contribute to funder reports as needed
Qualifications
- 2–4 years of experience in community organizing, advocacy, or nonprofit program coordination
- Strong understanding of civic engagement, public policy, or grassroots organizing
- Excellent organizational and project management skills
- Strong communication and facilitation abilities
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a small team environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with New York City or New York State policy and budget processes
- Experience working with older adults and/or LGBTQIA+ communities, particularly communities of color
- Familiarity with issues impacting LGBTQIA+ elders, including housing, healthcare, and economic security
- Experience tracking program data and outcomes for grants
